What happens if Davis is recalled and Senator Feinstein is elected? Can she then appoint him Senator until the next election? This would be bad if this happened. Gray Davis in a switch with Feinstein.

She could, of course, but I don't think that she'd want to. Davis is exceedingly unpopular on both sides of the aisle. The only reason any Democrat has to kiss up to Davis now is that he's the governor. Once he's gone, that reason would disappear, and I have no doubt that Gov. Feinstein (cough) would be able to think of someone she'd rather appoint instead of him.

An appointed Senator in California can serve no more than two years plus, if I've got it right, a period of 90 days prior to the even-year general election (+ the period between election and January 3, when a new congress sits).

So if DiFi is elected, to prevent an appointed Senator (my guess is Rep. Ellen Tauscher, but i've got more on my blog about that) from having to run in both '04 and '06, she'd have to wait until August 6, 2004 (89 days prior to the election) to appoint a new Senator. That's not going to happen, so the new Senator would have to run both in '04 to pick up the remaining term ,and the for reelection to the class in '06

Recall Reads
I'm in the middle of a bunch of stuff but I'll have some posts up later. Meanwhile I recommend the following: A lot of recall news at Prestopundit. All good reading. Xrlq's rant against Taxspenders Against the Recall....
