Whoda Thunk It?
It looks like gun control doesn’t work very well in Iraq, either. Where should we try it next? I imagine it could get a damn-near 100% success rate in Antarctica.

A damfool idea is a damfool idea anywhere.

More than a little late, but remember that each Iraqi is allowed one Kalashnikov [Ak47] and one pistol. Keep them at home, don’t even need a permit. Not wide-open, but better than some of our stupider governments! Albeit, right-to-carry is quietly gaining ground: one state (Delaware?) is in the process of enacting a law recognizing other State’s carry laws for tourists, though it still does not allow its own citizens to have guns…
I think what we were looking for was crewed weapons (heavy machine guns) and explosives (grenades, RPGs) and a number of those were in fact pointed out by locals - but generally by “hey, there’s one of them on my street”, like the trucks with rocket launchers. I wouldn’t want to try to bring one of those in either, some poor gyrene would be all too likely to introduce me to Allah.
