A Guv Against Illegal Immigration – Too Much to Ask?
Mickey Kaus and Dan Weintraub wonder aloud why none of the candidates in the recall succession election have taken up the illegal immigration issue. Kaus subsequently updated his entry to note that Joe “Who The Hell Is Joe Guzzardi?” Guzzardi is running on the border control issue.
According to the Angry Clam, however, Tom McClintock, has pledged to revive the Prop 187 appeal on which Acting Gov. Davis and Atty. Gen. Lockyer took a dive. Beyond asserting the state’s right to stop rewarding illegal immigrants for immigrating illegally, what else is a state official to do?
If McClintock’s common-sense “let the people decide” approach isn’t anti-immigrant anti-illegal-immigrant enough for your tastes, Howard Owens links to a Ventura County Star story indicating that his Congressman, Elton Gallegly is running on a platform on which combatting illegal immigration will be a central issue. So really, the question is not whether the Republicans have given up on dealing with illegal immigration, but rather, whether California voters have. Democrats are worse than worthless on this issue, as they must pander to both (1) illegal aliens, many of whom are also illegal voters, and (2) paranoid legal, naturalized immigrants who mistake every attack on illegal immigration for an attack on immigrants generally.

UPDATE: According to Matt Welch, Gallegly is no longer in the race. McClintock still is, however.
