A couple of weeks ago, I profiled
Diane Templin, the American “Independent” Party candidate for governor. I warned that the party is far right wing, even by right wing standards. It took a while, but finally an A.I.P.’er proved by point for me by leaving a comment over the weekend. Money quote:

You’re denigrating the third largest political party, and the fastest growing one in California.

And yes, AI is the third largest party with 1.92% of all registered voters. Greens are fourth with 1.07% and Libertarians are fifth with .58%.
That said, AI doesn’t pull nearly as many votes as registration, because a ton of people think they’re signing up to be Independents.
Also, the Green and Libertarian candidates tend to far outdo their registration numbers. Whether this is because of protest votes, sympathetic independents, or the desire to vote for a candidate for every office and just randomly choosing one, is beyond me.
