Mainstreaming Janice Brown
These days, it’s kind of shabby-chic to diss Ann Coulter in the blogosphere. It’s almost as though some conservatives have this idea that if we’d all band together and say bad things about Pat Buchanan (who deserves it) and Ann Coulter (who doesn’t), then maybe, just maybe, all those liberals out there will suddenly see the light and stop listening to Michael Moore, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Molly Ivins, Sarah Brady, Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Ted Kennedy, Rob “Meathead” Reiner, Jim Hightower, Barbara Boxer, Bill Moyers, Bill Maher, or anyone who writes for the Los Angeles Times except maybe Michael Ramirez or Roy Rivenburg. OK, I was kidding about that last example; we all know that no one reads the L.A. Times anymore, although the paper may still be polluting a few dogs’ minds by osmosis.
The bottom line is, liberals are going to do what they’re going to do, read what they’re going to read, and listen to what they are going to listen to. If they are following any leaders in making those decisions, the leaders in question sure as hell aren’t conservativse. So if you personally dislike Ann Coulter’s style, fine. But if you enjoy watching her give the liberals back a dose of the venom they dish out daily, then enjoy it, guilt-free.
To be sure, some of Coulter’s stuff is over the top, as are the critiques of the same that predictably ensue. Most of her stuff is spot on, however. This article on Janice Brown and the New York Times’s Orwellian use of the word “mainstream” is a fine example. Money quote:
Even Teddy Kennedy, who might be well advised to withhold comment on a woman’s position relative to a moving body of water, has described Brown as “out of the mainstream,” adding, “Let’s just hope this one can swim.”

Apparently, the filibuster list (current and planned) is now seven according to the Journal. Accordingly, I’ve created a little jpeg banner (30K) over at my site for any who wish to cut & paste.

The Ted Kennedy comments are funny, but I didn’t appreciate it one bit when she said, “My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.” And I say that as someone who is very critical of the New York Times.
Conservatives have enough trouble without having to defend somebody who says crap like that.

That’s the trouble with being extreme/funny. It’s extremely tough to do that right, and not go a little overboard every once in a while.

Bush has been allowing the Democrats to slap him around and treat him like a doormat with near-blanket filibusters, but once he wins re-election, he can afford to take a harder line.
My prediction is the gloves will come off after ‘04, as Bush takes a more aggressive approach to breaking the filibusters. The Democrats will not back down, but will become more vicious in their tactics and rhetoric.
I really fear what will transpire once a Supreme Court Justice announces retirement. It’s going to be nastier, more brutal than a street fight; I don’t think we’ll have seen anything like it.
The Democratic Senators will eat their own guts before they allow a conservative nominee approval to the Supreme Court. Senate Republicans won’t have the stomach to do what needs to be done to overcome the truly ruthless and cutthroat tactics the Democratic Senators will adopt without hesitation, apology, or regret.
