I have to beg to differ with Steve of Begging to differ, who has no sympathy for a fellow blogger who recently got fired from Microsoft for showing pics of Macs delivered to Microsoft’s Redmond campus. Did Microsoft have a legal right to fire him over the embarassing incident? Of course. But that doesn’t mean they were right to do it. May Microsoft suffer far more embarassment over this petty action than they got over the photo that prompted it.

The way I read it. Microsoft wasn’t embarassed about the Macs. They were upset that he disclosed which building on campus the MSCopy shop was in. It also seemed that he knew they were anal about these things (I assume for corporate espionage but maybe terrirism). He said he was careful when he took the picture not to show any buildings or other security info. Yet he’s careless enough to disclose it in words. Sounds to me like they have an ironclad security policy and he violated it.

I blog from work and even have work postings, but I am CAREFUL not to divulge ANYTHING in my posts: the company I work for, the specific industry, products. The fact that I spend company time and resources blogging is enough to get me fired and it’s just common sense - you don’t air your company’s dirty laundry to the public.
The bottom line is that I have to put more of the blame on the blogger for not realizing the fairly predictable outcome of what he did. It’s not like MS management style is open, caring and forgiving.
