Kooky Kalifornians

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 10:53 am

Venomous Kate has the scoop on the latest example of political correctness. Apparently, abbreviations notwithstanding, the loony left believes that our P.C.s aren’t P.C. enough. All this derives from a little-known loophole in the 13th Amendment, which still permits slavery among computer components. Funny-money quote:

“Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label,” Joe Sandoval, division manager of [L.A. County's] purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors. “We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature.”

Can’t we disenfranchise this guy?

Browser Hacking

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 10:27 am

Computer World has more on the security risks to which Internet Explorer is vulnerable. Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, and all those other web browsers you’ve never heard of do not have this vulnerability. Only Internet Explorer does. It sure is odd how the same company that goes overboard to protect the “security” of its own facilities can’t be bothered to expend a fraction of that energy to make its mass-marketed products secure.

And to think that I fulfilled by law school writing requirement with a paper defending MS and its ilk against antitrust charges stemming from its crappy web browser. “Feh,” whatever that means.

Laws For Thee But Not For Me

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:17 am

Via the Puppy Blender comes news that the RIAA and the MPAA are seeking a permanent exemption from antitrust law. I can support that position, on one condition: I get a permanent exemption from copyright law.

Off Target

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 7:19 am

In the past, I’ve blogged that there is no functional difference between illegal “assault” rifles and ordinary, legal, semiautomatic rifles. Actually, that’s not quite true. “Assault” rifles can do one thing regular rifles can’t: get you thrown in jail and in all likelihood, get your gun store and range closed down.

Nice work, Ilya Yampolsky. So much for having one place to shoot in south Orange County. The timing could scarcely be worse, as I had just renewed my annual membership at the range, and was at the top of the waiting list for an S&W .500. Now I’m wondering how I’ll even get my deposit back.

Thanks to the Angry Clam for the pointer.

UPDATE: I just spoke to someone at On Target; he says they’re open for business as usual. We’ll see how long that lasts. Then again, now that “Attorney” General Bill Lockyer is on the case, maybe these guys will be exonerated after all.

Asshat of the Day

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 5:30 pm

Today’s award is a tie between the San Francisco Chronicle, which had to ask whether or not it is wrong to root for the terrorists trying to destabilize Iraq, and Laurel Eby of San Jose, who answered that question in a way that made clear that her allegiance to the Democrat Party trumps any semblance of allegiance she might have to the U.S.:

I’m definitely torn, because I obviously don’t want any more of our soldiers getting killed, but I also wouldn’t mind the quagmire going on just long enough to ruin Bush’s re-election chances.

It’s the Economy, Stooopid

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 11:18 am

Just a few weeks ago, all those lying liars on the right told us that the economy had grown 7.2% last quarter. It didn’t. It grew by 8.2%. Good thing we have Paul Krugman to keep reminding us how badly our boom-to-bust economy has unravelled over the past three scandalous years.

SBX 3-1: Is the Party Over?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 10:26 am

Yesterday, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass SBX 3-1, a bill that would repeal SB 60, the bill that would grant driver licenses to illegal aliens. Ironically, SBX 3-1 was pushed in part by Senator Gil Cedillo, who sponsored SB 60. That should be the first red flag. Why would Cedillo lead the charge to repeal his own bill? The answer, I believe, is twofold.

Terrorists for Dean

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 4:30 pm

I can’t blame Howard Dean for the fact that scum like Ted Rall support him. I can, however, blame Howard Dean for enthusiastically accepting that endorsement.

So much for Democrats vs. Republicans as the liberal vs. conservative parties. Now it’s the Ted Rall Party vs. the Not Completely Insane Party.

Darwin Award Nominee

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 3:23 pm

It’s too early to nominate him just yet, but hope springs eternal. Jeffery S. Murr, a 24-year-old schlock whose first name will never be spelled “Xrlq,” was critically injured during a hazing ritual while trying to get inducted into the Klan. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.
