Screwy Sitemeter

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:52 am

One possibility is that I really got 278 hits yesterday between midnight and 7:30 p.m., and zero hits since. The other is that SiteMeter is on the fritz. Anyone else experience this?

Ive had zero hits today also. Site meter is definitely screwy.

    Hmmm…maybe people just aren’t coming…

It is not happening to me today, but did a month ago, and it was on the day I was quoted by Kausfiles AND California Insider.

  3. Xrlq Says:

That can’t be the whole story, as SiteMeter also says no one was visiting at the time you and Val commented.

  4. Justene Says:

I had a remarkably low number this morning. less than 20 since midnight or something like that.

My Sitemeter wasn’t showing up last night, and it said that the page wasn’t available, but I got 70 hits yesterday, which is actually a little higher than my average, and I’ve got 35 so far today, which is within the normal range.

I stopped using sitemeter for a long time (because i estimate based on other software i use) that sitemeter mises about 30% of my visits. Yesterday, for example, SM shows 350ish visits. Awstats shows 530 visits. The discrepency in pages is much bigger (1591 v. 650ish).

I went back to it so i could play in the TLB site rankings but I rely more on Awstats.

…I also saw a vistor from NBC.com referred from my site on someone else’s sitemeter, but they never appeared on mine…

  8. dowingba Says:

Yes Sitemeter definitely doesn’t count stats very accurately, and I too use AWstats as my final judge. I think one reason is that the sitemeter graphic has to actually load for a visit to count, and sometimes it might load too slow, or not load at all. Also, if someone doesn’t have javascript enabled, they wouldn’t be counted at all, unless I am mistaken. I’ve also seen the graphic on my page appear twice, side by side, for some reason, every once in a while. So I guess that’s Sitemeter trying to make up the difference.

  9. John A. Kalb Says:

From what I remember, there is a non-java version of the sitemeter counter, though most people don’t use it.

I did see a decline in page views (which is all AXS’ counter shows) when I went to Sitemeter, but I didn’t know what that was from.

  10. triticale Says:

Sitemeter shows 23 hits so far today, on an average of 24. Unfortunately, a lot of these look to be people researching the grain whose name I use, but at least I can say the counter is spinning.

  11. Justene Says:

What’s there to research about triticale? Tribbles eat it.

This morning, I had 13 visitors, an hour or so later, I had 243, another hour or so, 95. Try to explain that away as anything other than: sitemeter is screwed up.

  12. McGehee Says:

Tribbles eat quadrotriticale. Which I guess means the grain has twelve lobes instead of three.

  13. triticale Says:

And it took a miracle of lobes and fishes to feed all the tribbles…
