Frisco Update

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 11:42 am

Frisco Chronicle columnist and token reasonable person Debra Saunders has a nice column today that fact-checks the meme equating gay marriage with civil rights, and Gavin Newsom’s government-sponsored crime with genuine acts of civil disobedience by private individuals who faced a real risk of criminal prosecution. Here’s the money quote (with certain expletives deleted):

But The Special City has long held a cheap view of civil disobedience. Remember last year’s anti-war demonstrators. They deliberately clogged city streets and blocked access to government buildings under the mantle of “civil disobedience”

    Ha, FART.

  2. Xrlq Says:

IIRC, the Tahoe area has a TART, even though that sort of activity is forbidden in the Tahoe area (though it’s legal in most parts of NV).

    Don’t call it “Frisco”.

That’s my Public Service Announcement, from one who was born there, some years ago, and now thinks of it as a city that once had charm and style. Even if the Longshoremen were born there.

Governor Arnold asked Attorney General Lockyer to uphold the law and arrest Newsom. Lockyer told Arnold where he could shove it. Time for a new Attorney General.

BART is outrageous. You shouldn’t have subsidized their extortionary behavior. They raise prices fewer people ride, and they wonder why. Liberals…

  5. Xrlq Says:

    BART? What’s BART?

  6. Joel B. Says:

Point taken, FART would be appropriately descriptive as well, given the usual odor.

Well, I must be filthy rich because the tax cut helped me, but the prices for BART are not IMO excessive. Especially on the commute from east bay, its not only cheaper than the trip plus parking, its a lot faster and safer than the bridge. When the destination area has parking running from $15 to $35 for the day, its not all that hard to view $2.35 one way through the tunnel as reasonable. The other option is to ride a motorcycle, which I do, but that’s begging for death on the Bay Bridge every morning.

The one area is potentially too high is to or from the airport, and that’s because San Mateo county didn’t “subsidize their extortionary behavior”

  8. Xrlq Says:

Ah, that explains it. I paid $4.60 one way from the airport to Glen Park, which is all of six stops. I thought, good God, if they’re charging $4.60 for that piddly stretch, it must run upwards of $10.00 to get to the East Bay. That was a lot more than I remembered paying when I lived in the area (1996-99).

  9. Joel B. Says:

It is $4.70 to get from Downtown S.F. to Pleasanton, which makes for a round-trip cost of $9.40. The price isn’t outrageous for people coming from MacArthur, but BART makes the least money of those trips. Fewer and fewer people are riding the higher margin trips because…just to give you an idea, it costs $180/month to commute on BART to S.F. from Pleasanton…To take a vanpool from Tracy is only $140. And the time is the same, or Tracy is marginally quicker if traffic is right. It costs about $140/month to commute from Walnut Creek to S.F., and average vanpool cost is about $40 less. Plus, you get door to door service, and it’s usually substantially quicker.

The San Mateo exits aren’t any more expensive than the others, the BART system just throws about a $2.00 premium on the Airport. If you were coming from Millbrae you’re fair would have been $3.25. A disturbingly average fare, if you don’t live in Oakland.

    Caltrain! Caltrain! Caltrain!
