Ananova to Blogosphere: You’ve Been Punk’d?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:12 pm

This story about a German couple allegedly being too stupid to reproduce is all over the Blogosphere. I’m skeptical. Here’s why:

  1. No one in the story has a name. For example, the only name given to the couple is “A German couple.” That by itself could be explained by privacy concerns, but if so, why give their ages? And what on earth reason is there for withholding the identity of spokesman for the clinic?
  2. There is no such city as “Lubek.” There is a city called Lübeck (which is sometimes spelled “Luebeck”), and that city does have a university. Sloppy journalism, perhaps. Not a good sign
  3. Based on the English translation “University Clinic of Lu(e)be(c)k,” one would assume that the university clinic associated with the University of Lübeck would go by the name “Universitätsklinikum Lübeck.” However, upon browsing the web site of the Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein – Campus Lübeck (University Clinic of Schleswig-Holstein – Lübeck Campus) I did not locate a single instance in which the clinic was referred to simply as “University Clinic of Lübeck” rather than “University Clinic of Schleswig-Holstein.” By contrast, its sister campus in Kiel does get referred to occasionally as “Universitätsklinikum Kiel,” or University Clinic of Kiel.
    UPDATE:
  4. This objection may not be valid after all. According to commenter Nico, the Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein – Campus Lübeck is commonly referred to simply as “Uniklinik Lübeck,” i.e., “University Clinic of Lübeck.”

  5. Something this outrageous should be all over the news in Germany. Maybe it is, but I haven’t found it yet. A Yahoo! search for the terms “Lübeck 30 36 [the ages of the purported couple]” turned up nothing of interest, nor did the first page of a more general search for Lübeck alone.
  6. The clinic’s web site says nothing about this bizarre story. This is odd, considering that the Ananova story claims the university is “undertak[-ing] a study to try to find out if there are more couples with a similar lack of sex education.” It does, however, list a certain Frau Dr. Anja Aldenhoff-Zöllner as a contact person for the media.

While my initial research is far from conclusive, if I were a betting man, I’d say the blogosphere has just been punk’d. I’ve sent an email to Dr. Aldenhoff-Zöllner, inquiring as to the veracity of the story, which I’ve reproduced below. I’ll keep you posted.

Bloglines Anomaly

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 12:13 pm

Lonewacko just alerted me to a compatibility problem between this site and Bloglines. If you attempt to subscribe to this blog by inputting the URL of the blog in the bottom field where it reads “Subscribe by Entering URL,” Bloglines will find two feeds that don’t actually exist. Worst, it wont’ find the feeds that do. I have alerted Bloglines to this problem, and hope it will be corrected soon. In the meantime, anyone wishing to subscribe to this blog may do so by inputting the full URL of the feed itself. To track new entries and comments, use these:

  1. Blog Entries: http://xrlq.com/wp-rss2.php
  2. Comments: http://xrlq.com/wp-commentsrss2.php

If anyone knows of a workaround that will help Bloglines find these files on its own, please let me know.

UPDATE: Bloglines emailed back to tell me the problem was due to an anomaly in the <head> area of the index page, which was telling news aggregators to look for RSS feeds at http://xrlq.com/feed/rss2/ and http://xrlq.com/comments/feed/rss2/, two URLS that didn’t work. Presumably, after failing to find those, Bloglines falls back on the filenames “index.rdf” and “atom.xml” by default. The problem with the bad URLS has since been fixed, so hopefully Bloglines will soon figure that out. Right now, however, Bloglines is still pointing to the nonexistent atom.xml and index.rdf files. Now that the problem on my end has been fixed, here are the URLs you should be using to subscribe (and, theoretically, the ones Bloglines will soon start finding on its own):

  1. Blog Entries: http://xrlq.com/feed/rss2/
  2. Comments: http://xrlq.com/comments/feed/rss2/

FINAL UPDATE: Bloglines found them. Here’s hoping it will soon un-find the two nonexistent feeds, index.rdf and atom.xml.

Pop Quiz: Minnesota Justice

Q: What’s the difference between Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr., who allegedly abducated and murdered Dru Sjodin, and William Gene Myears, who allegedly abducted and murdered Erika Dalquist?

A: Both murderers had the good sense to commit their crimes in states that do not have a death penalty. However, only Myears knew better than to cross a state line in the process.
