That Dog Don’t Hunt

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 5:08 pm

The Dog Trainer reports that the Dog Terminator is not to be.

The governor said that the plan to repeal the law prohibiting the destruction of animals for at least six days was a “mistake” made when he hastily put together his budget after taking office last year.

“That was an oversight of mine in December when we were trying to put the budget together in two seconds,” said Schwarzenegger, a self-described animal lover and the owner of three dogs: Sarge, Sammy and Spunky.

“And of course I grew up with every animal you can think of,” he said. “I’m an animal lover.”

Hah, Jeff; I had just copy/pasted that same article to Email to you, but thought I would check first to see if you had it on your blog already. Sure enough you did. :-)

Well, at least if Schwarzenegger is paroling cutthroats and murderers in record numbers, at least he’s also giving stays of executions to our lost pets. =) While I execrate him on the former, I appreciate him on the latter.

Rereading Schwarzenegger’s comment today I think it’s significant that he says “oversight of mine” as opposed to blaming an underling. It’s small but classy.

I agree, especially given the likelihood that it was an oversight of an underling. My guess is that Arnold gave a general directive to compile a list of all post-1998 laws that cost the state money (or maybe all laws with Tom Hayden’s name on them?) but no one went through the Hayden Act carefully enough to figure out why it was passed, or even that most of its provisions were budget-neutral or better.
