‘Hat of the Day: Mark A. York
If a tree falls in the wilderness and no one hears it, did it really make a sound? If you have a blog and no one reads it, do you really have a blog?
After posting a series of consistently trollish and increasingly nasty comments in the only forum where he could get an audience, troll extraordinaire médiocre Mark A. York has managed to get himself banned by Patterico, the highly acclaimed blogger known to John Leo readers as “one occasionally amused blogger.” To give you an idea what a feat that is to get banned from that site, consider that Ted Rall is not banned there, nor is M. “Clod” Croche - although it’s possible that Croche’s frequent, unintentional humor in consistently missing the point of everything may be part of the reason the Patster keeps him around. Regardless. My point is, you really have to go out of your way to piss off Patterico enough to get him to consider banning you, let alone to actually go through with it.
Even after banning the jerk, Patterico was waaaayyyyy too fair and requesting that his regular readers refrain from posting comments mocking Mr. Dork, um, I mean, York, in a forum where he can no longer respond. Rather than graciously accept that, Marky-Mark responded with even more whining about how everyone is wrong except him:
That’s big of you counselor. No doubt prompted by my comment on Mr. Patterico skewing Sen. Byron Dorgan D-North Dakota as ventiloquist’s dummy. Is this justified behavior by a native Texan prosecutor for Los Angeles County? Maybe Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn-D should know about this?
Don’t worry, Detective, I’m already on it. I just got off the phone with Mr. Hahn-D, who was only slightly surprised to learn he had a D in his name, but who was “shocked, shocked!” to learn that not all D.A.s in Los Angeles County are Democrats, and worse still, some were born in states other than California! He was just about ready to issue the orders to fire all non-native and/or Republican D.A.s in Los Angeles County, when I gently reminded him that he’s only mayor of the city of Los Angeles, not the entire county. “Dammit,” he replied. “You mean the city and county of L.A. are, like, different? Why can’t things be nice and simple, like they are in Frisco?”
Ironically, Marky-Mark’s bitch about being banned by Patterico comes on the heels of another post in which he complains about being banned from another site, Jay Rosen’s:
“YOU ARE NOT WELCOME AT PRESSTHINK. I WANT YOU TO LEAVE NOW. Don’t come back.”
What a strange view from a journalism professor to a current journalism student.
Well, that explains a lot. If there’s one thing lower than a journalist, it’s someone who aspires to become one. And if there’s anything lower than that, it’s a journalism student who can’t get into a better school than Cal State, which will admit almost anyone with a pulse. What’s wrong, Markmeister, competition too tough over at the University of Spoiled Children? Not that you can’t get a decent education at CSUN; you can, but not with grades like these.
Patterico may be a fair-minded person, but I’m not. York got multiple second chances on Patterico’s site, but one shot was enough to get himself banned on mine. By contrast, anyone wishing to poke fun at Mr. York is more than welcome here. I’ll begin by reposting the comment in which Patterico politely told this jerk to go bye-bye, followed by the two comments that followed it and were subsequently edited out of (misplaced?) respect for the jerk.
Please find yourself another site to comment on.

Bloody peasant!(And your Blogger site sucks too, Mark. Reminds me of that pea soup I had…after I brought it back for a command performance.)
As for Moore, what more can one say? He’s a bald-faced liar. But watch the underpriveleged masses claim “IF DIS IS TRU, HE WULD B SUD. HES NOT, SO ITS TRU!!!!”
I hate that argument. Our courts are stuffed full enough without having to work El Lardo in.

Carry on!
UPDATE: I’ve been called plenty of nasty names in my day, some deserved, some not, but “vile right-wing female going under the handle XLQ” is definitely a first. Check it out. In the same entry, he also butchers the spelling of Justene Adamec’s name, and even such a basic word as “something.” Meanwhile, in a comment, he proudly announces that at prestigious schools like CSUN, B, B, A, C+, D, D and B add up to “cum laude.” Sometimes I have to wonder which is more pathetic, Marky’s ideas or his spelling of his ideas.

I’m graduating cum laude from CSUN miss vitriol.
July 15th, 2004 at 5:17 am
I’d love to hear what Mayor Hahn said about of the county prosecutors. Love to. He’s a Democrat which is what the D stands for sans his home town of San Pedro but I can see you need the material to support your ad hominem. Look I was just stirring the pile in the compost bin. You fell for it and I got the methane of the day. Do you have a publication if 150,000 idiots a read it for free? I guess so, but not a real one that has a cover price. See you one election day sis.
July 15th, 2004 at 6:03 am
Cum laude?!? That high?!? From CSUN?
Hear that ringing sound? It’s Harvard calling offering you a professorship.
Seriously, if cum laude is the best you can manage from CSUN, you are pretty dense.
July 15th, 2004 at 7:18 am
Angry: did you see the grades he proudly and inexplicably displayed on his web site? If he thinks those grades are earning him cum laude, he’s even dumber than he lets on.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the gynecologist. I don’t think it’s anything serious; i just don’t feel very “fresh” today, and I’d rather play it safe since I’ve never been to a gynecologist before, having labored thus far under the illusion that I was a man. Thanks to Mark the Detective for setting the record straight on that.
July 15th, 2004 at 8:52 am
You undersestimate the number of courses required for BA in Journalism and Environmental Biology at CSUN. Cal State is one of the hardest school systems in the country. I mean it was too tough for James Taranto and John Fund who failed to graduate from CSUN and CSU Sacramento. Cheer up you actaully are as pathetic as you all sound.
July 15th, 2004 at 9:27 am
You’re killing me, Marky! I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but the Cal State University system and the University of California are not the same. Yes, CSUN is a University that is run by the state of California. Yes, it is located in Northridge, which is part of the city of Los Angeles. No, that doesn’t mean you’re getting a degree from UCLA. Sorry.
Oh, one more thing. I know you get flattered whenever people around the country talk about what a great school “Cal” is. Hate to burst another bubble, but they’re talking about the University of California at Berkeley, not any part of the “Cal” State system, which most non-Californians have never heard of.
July 15th, 2004 at 10:39 am
Don’t argue with XRLQ. Regardless of your training you will lose. Badly.
July 15th, 2004 at 11:00 am
I’ll not only argue with her pretzel logic I’ve already beaten her. Who said I went to UCLA? I never did. Cal State has one of the lowest graduation rates going; 16% after six years. That’s not because it’s too easy. Again Taranto and Fund to Heritage Foundation babies failed to get degrees there. Hint: they din’t go to Cal either toots. Who the hell do you think you’re dealing with, some of your dimwitted readers?
July 15th, 2004 at 11:23 am
Marky - how did you reach the conclusion that xrlq is female?
July 15th, 2004 at 12:39 pm
I really don’t want to debate the quality of a Cal State education since I went to CSUN but after looking at Mark’s grades that he posted, I think he should study more and blog less. Cal State Schools have low graduation rates for a lot of reasons-students transfer, work, lose interest but it’s not due to difficult courses. As far as his blogging goes, he is not persuasive and wasting his time. If he wants to believe that time is being wasted due to close minded conservatives, that’s ok. He needs to focus on priorities that matter to him-school, screenplays, whatever.
July 15th, 2004 at 1:04 pm
Roberta, I agree. Clearly, it is possible to get a fine education at any Cal State campus if you set your mind to it. Equally clearly, Marky-Mark has not done that. Still, I have to think that part of the reason for Cal State’s low graduation rate, in addition to the reasons you stated, is that it admits a lot of people who have no business being in college. For them, the courses probably are too difficult, as any serious university courses would be.
July 15th, 2004 at 1:41 pm
Right that’s why I got more A’s in them than not. Try the CSUN biology dept which I have collateral field in if you want to find a hard ride. Of course your training was rigorous at your fictitious school.
July 15th, 2004 at 1:42 pm
Still no ccomment on Taranto and Fund. I winder why?
July 15th, 2004 at 1:58 pm
“Winder” and “ccomment” no more: it’s probably because neither of them read this blog. I’m sure both would have plenty to say about it if they did, but as for me, I couldn’t care less.
In other news, my visit to the gynecologist did not go well this morning. The doctor - he was such a dearie - advises me that since before I was born, my vagina been sealed shut, which is the reason I’ve had to pee through some other weird appendage we ladies aren’t supposed to have. He also advised me that my breasts were small, overly hairy, and unlikely to be suitable for breastfeeding if I ever bore a child, a possibility he described as “highly unlikely.” If that’s not bad enough, he told me that my life expectancy is several years shorter than that of the average woman, due in large part to some “Y” chromosome lodged in there where one of those Xs should be.
July 15th, 2004 at 2:10 pm
Yes sir, I’d say that’s about enough of sweating the small stuff and dodging the issues. You’ve had enough.
July 15th, 2004 at 2:22 pm
Mark, I am not trying to be hostile or engage in competition on which schools are tougher. As a parent, I get frustrated at students who squander a valuable commodity like time. Blogging on conservative websites is not productive for you-you are persuading no one and wasting your time. Study harder and worry less about others who have dropped out for various reasons from Cal State schools. Dave Gerrold is a CSUN dropout who quit school when he sold a script to star trek and went on to write sci fi books. Harry Turtledove flunked out of Cal Tech and went on to finish his degree in history and write books. Everything is about focus and keeping your eye on what you want. I am saying this without sarcasm or hostility towards you.
July 15th, 2004 at 2:28 pm
I can testify that a bachelor’s from CSU Sacramento doesn’t amount to much. I’ve got one.
A certain quote from Groucho Marx comes to mind — something like, “I wouldn’t want to attend a university that would give me a diploma” or some such…
July 15th, 2004 at 4:48 pm
I’m not blogging at conservative websites. I was commenting at a journalism website and I’m a Journalism student: A liberal commentator. I’m a 51 year old ex-government scientist. I was attacked and banned by conservative bloggers untrained in the field. I was insulted by Patterico, there at his house and now here. You started this. I’ll friggin finish it. Don’t tell me about my school. I’m well-aware of the ups and downs of a poor man’s commuter school but it’s good training. Only fools use academic achievement as a negative. I write my own blog and books in American history and environmental Journalism. You aren’t in my league and it shows.
July 15th, 2004 at 5:14 pm
I will add that Roberta is at least the most civil commenter I’ve encountered. As a CSUN grad I am certainly making note of that. Taranto and Fund were given a pass. That’s the point. I won’t be getting that same nod.
July 15th, 2004 at 6:25 pm
You’re a fine one to lecture anybody about civility, Mark. If you had an ounce of it yourself, you wouldn’t have been banned at Rosen’s site or Patterico’s, and I would never have heard of you.
July 15th, 2004 at 6:37 pm
I didn’t insult you here, Mark. What you saw was a trackback to my post, in which I linked to Xrlq’s post and noted that he is not impressed with you. That’s not an insult, it’s an observation. Xrlq is insulting you plenty here, but I am not.
I also would like to disassociate myself with any notion that one cannot get a good education at almost any school. I don’t think anyone here is saying that, if you read their comments in their entirety — but if anyone *is* saying that then I disagree. You get out of school what you put into it. You don’t even need to go to school to get a great education, if you are willing to educate yourself.
I think Roberta has a point with her comments. She’s a wise person.
July 15th, 2004 at 6:38 pm
Wow, an entire post for the mediocre asshat troll Mark A. York (a.k.a. Mark York, Marky, publius, and spock). He’s also been banned at Roger L. Simon’s and Done Deal. He’s actually been banned at PressThink twice, resulting in the firm, but desperate email, to stay away after numerous pleas and warnings. He hasn’t. His new alias, spock, has so far managed to be slightly less incoherent and vitriolic than his previous attempts. I predict it won’t last. Trolls can only hide their true nature for so long.
This prick thinks he has something important to say because:
- he is descended from people who were alive in the 1600s,
- couldn’t get a college degree,
- couldn’t make it as a carpenter
- couldn’t make it as an actor
- couldn’t rise above entry level government work (GS-4/5),
- couldn’t get published so he published himself through a vanity press,
- got an A in logic class (brags about it anyway, but labels everything inappropriately as ad hominem circumstantial), and
- he’s accomplished so little by the ripe old age of 51!
- But now that he’s in J-school and might graduate in December of this year, he’s got creds!
[hard to type, fingers making L-shape on forehead]
He singlehandedly saved the forests and waterways of America from evil conservatives and Bill Clinton personally corresponded with him and took his advice on environmental policy.
Sometimes it’s too easy. Now I feel bad. I need a shower. I need a chalkboard, “I will not torment the emotionally frail.”
July 15th, 2004 at 8:33 pm
The internet was cleaned up a tad more today when Yahoo! groups did away with York’s WritingFacts site. This is further testimony that this person and those with whom he associates are recognizable as internet terrorists. The filth and vileness on that site were beyond belief. What a relief to know the internet can be cleansed once the danger of a site is made known to the proper authorities. Of course, York is most likely now ranting on his blog against violations of his rights to free speech. What a travesty!
July 15th, 2004 at 8:46 pm
X,
You probably got this guy more hits in the past day or so than he had gotten up to that point. He should be thanking you — sort of.
July 15th, 2004 at 9:08 pm
Tim,
How do you know that York is spock and Publius?
July 15th, 2004 at 9:21 pm
If he is, it adds a second layer of irony to this post, in which he blames me for the fact that he assumed I was a woman.
July 15th, 2004 at 9:27 pm
Mark must be one lonely guy.
July 15th, 2004 at 9:51 pm
Patterico,
As publius, Mark continued using his email address. He also continue using the same phrases and carried over old debates/fallacies from previous flames.
I called him on it in a post on this thread. Soon after, Jay removed all publius posts from both that thread and the current thread. I suspected publius when he replied suddenly (new poster) to you post with, “that’s what they all say.”
Soon after all the publius posts were deleted from PressThink, spock showed up. spock’s email addr is a play on the one I use with this pseudonym. Same voice. Jay’s techie should be able to confirm by checking IP date/times with the posts.
He’ll probably tell you if you ask him. He’s a troll, an idiot and misguided, but I’ll bet you he’s an honest idiot.
July 15th, 2004 at 10:21 pm
I was one of those evil conservatives that so frightened Mark at PressThink. However, long before he was banned myself and others acceeded to the request of the blogs (remarkably patient) owner and avoided engaging Marky. He managed to get banned by a liberal professor who is very patient. He then wen’t off and described the blog as conservative.
This guy is sick.
July 16th, 2004 at 4:42 am
Did you idiots read what you wrote? All of those accomplishments are not negatives save to you anonymous wingnut trolls.
Counseler Patterico your twisted logic path starts at the Rosen comment that “I wanted to be banned.” Pardon me does a Cornell degree grant you powers in Psychiatry. Weren’t you an econ major?
Tim is the consumate troll. He lives in Rosen’s memory hole waiting to pounce with anti-media propaganda and has some company in the form of Moore, a cerified radical with at least the guts to say who he is. Still the same paranoid whack job as the rest of you but honest about it.
No one mentioned my books. You know the one about living in Alaska in a log cabin, but hey that’s just whimp stuff right tough guys? And the new one about my ancestor Major Colburn the patriot of the American Revolution. Our house is a museum and National Historic site. I wrote the nomination for the National Park service. “Liberal” patriot to you all. Be sure to buy a copy when it comes out next year. You could actually learn something of value.
Roy you’re out of your league, but for the record I never thought you wanted to kill me. David Masiel, the blipperton, sure but I didn’t take it seriously. Of course now I can’t monitor him since you and the whining women of http://www.writers.net shut him down so you’re on your own there.
All of these assaults and bannings of me are pseudo-refutations, ad mominems circumstantial ad hominems, and other logical fallacies found in every conservative rant in the world. Classic groupthink. You’re too stupid and vitriolic to know though, but beliive me most do. Those that can descern the difference will be voting against you this fall. I take comfort in that.
xrlq lift some weights, maybe they’ll grow back?

July 16th, 2004 at 6:04 am
OK, our troll is once again in near melt down mode at PressThink. You can almost hear the sobbing through the red faced banging of his index fingers on the keyboard. Rosen will likely delete his multi-post descent into incoherence so, for posterity, may we capture his schizophrenic demise here?
I’m sure Marky and the whole Star Trek crew can add to the script later.
——–
Can’t you people carry on a legitimate debate? Sounds like more vanity press validation and conspiracy against the machine to me. I’ll continue to scan bookstore shelves and real newspapers for reasoned theses on world matters. There’s a lot of decent work out there. Damn shame no one here, a “press” site, seems to know it.

Looks like only one uses his real name. How interesting. One, if John Lynch is real of course. The best way to get rid of unwanted posters even if unfairly accused as troublemakers, is to stop TALKING ABOUT THEM IN A GROUPTHINK PEFORATIVE MANNER! Two can play at this game and I will if it doesn’t cease. Make them stop Jay Rosen. Make them frickin stop!

Marky, our clueless troll c&p’s the source of my post above on his weblog. He adds this comment at the end:
One thing blog trolls can do is link to other blogs that they can build an out of context argument from. It’s classic sidestepping propaganda.
Hmmm … wouldn’t want to build an “out of context” argument about Mark’s lunacy using links to (wait for it) Mark’s blog!!
Circumstantial ad hominems! Circumstantial ad hominems, I say!
Mark, I’m not arguing that you’re an ignorant obtuse troll because you’ve been a loser all your life. I’m stating that you’re and ignorant obtuse troll AND you’ve been a loser all your life. This is not a logic fallacy.

July 17th, 2004 at 4:59 am
The graduation rates are low because classes are full, hard to get in order to graduate, and a myriad of other reasons. It’s public school. It’s also terribly bureaucratic with transfer credits and so on and the demands from the professors and department chairs are high. It’s working for the state for free basically. Most just walk away from the place. Getting into college is easy. Getting out is more difficult. You people should end this. It’s not going to turn out well in the defmation department. I got an A in that law course too. You left that off of course.

Oh my Marky-Mark. I supposed, since anyone who really cared enough about what you said to take offense, could move any disagreement with you out of the virtual world into the real world.
Considering you’ve made that encounter relatively easy by posting all your personal information and you’ve made physical threats against others, I suspect sooner or later that will happen.
You may misinterpret the fact that I haven’t cared enough to look you up, with cowardice.
I’m not a nice person, Marky-Mark. I have actually enjoyed pushing you over the edge. It’s fun to read your keyboard spittle and watch you waste your time trying to defend and explain why you, once again, were banned and how you’re not really the loser everyone says you are.
I take great satisfaction in anonymously playing on your insecurities and causing you grief. If you ever actually pop a blood vessel reading one of my taunts, please, be sure to write about it on your blog.
Like I said, I’m not a nice person. Here, or in real life.
