Ikea
The name “ikea” derives from an inside joke. Originally pronounced “ICKY-uh,” it was a thinly-veiled jab at the food they sell. Discuss.

I always thought it was the Norwegian word for “stupid, convoluted joinery”

I think it refers to everything they sell, not just their food. Or it could mean, “junk sold to foolish college students.”

I’ve been to IKEA once or twice. I’ve also worked with Swedes. It was certainly interesting to see the Swedish lifestyle (or “lifstil” as the say in “suedois”) being sold to America’s multicultural mosaic. I was also surprised at their prices. I thought they were upscale but the prices of some things were fairly reasonable. Of course, they fact that some of them appeared to be from China explains that.

I had heard a lot of hype about how great IKEA is. What a letdown when I actually went there. Maybe it was my mood at the time, but I wasn’t impressed.
