The email I got back read something like: "I understand you found out about this via a web search. As you know, web searches (or the internet or something similar) are unreliable, and our reporters don't rely on them" The first web page I sent had a video which, of course, would be hard to fake. The second web page I sent was just a collection of links to newspapers, including to the L.A. Times. Unreliable indeed. Heh.
