“New” Security Measures
Recently my comment spam has gone from figuratively obscene to literally obscene. Before I try anything more drastic, I’m going to ask that all commenters address me by name (Xrlq, that is, not my real name) in the comment box. It should be a trivial burden on human commenters, but with any luck it will keep the comment spam out down to a more manageable level. Thanks to Xrlq Barr for the tip.
UPDATE: Or maybe not. In the time it took me to write this post, I got four trackback spams. Trackbacks are now turned off for the time being, so if until/unless someone can provide a better solution, anyone wishing to link to me should post a comment or send me an email notifying me of the link.
UPDATE x2: Then again, simply disabling trackbacks for pre-2005 entries may have done the trick for trackback spams, so I’ve turned Trackbacks back on for Year Four. Also, running the same query with “comment_status” substituted for “trackback_status” may have obviated the need for the “type my name” trick. We’ll see.

Do you not have Spam Karma and Spaminator plugins install? Shame shame if you don’t!

Spam Karma is the way to go. The latest version has experimental Trackback filtering support. Version 2.0 should be even better. I’ve contributed to the project and have helped troubleshoot it for a few months… it’s quite a beast.
