Bureaucrat Logic

Both of these photos were taken while parked at the same spot on the southbound (southern) Portola Parkway exit off CA 241, and both were taken through the same window (the windshield).

Note the following:

  1. The “SE” on the rear view mirror means exactly what it suggests, i.e., I really was facing southeast when I took both pictures.
  2. The offramp does not curve, and is perpendicular to Portola Parkway.
  3. Portola Parkway itself does curve, however, in both directions. Whether you turn left or right on Portola Parkway, it will curve to the left by approximately 90% almost immediately thereafter, and will continue in a more or less straight line from that point on.

Nevertheless, the Transportation Corridor Agency maintains that the sign is accurate. Why?

Another One Bites the Dust

Buh-bye, Kevin Shelley. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Do, however, savor one last bit of undeserved praise from your hometown paper, the Frisco Chronicle:

Just months after taking office, Shelley’s studiedly non-partisan handling of the politically charged October 2003 recall election drew grudging praise from Republicans and left some Democrats muttering that he hadn’t helped his party enough.

Even his opponents agreed that the newly elected secretary of state showed his political savvy — and his nose for the future — by playing the recall campaign straight down the middle.

O-kay.

UPDATE: Gotta love those secondhand ‘lanches. Thanks to Boi for sharing the wealth.

UPDATE x2: The Mafioso, who appears to have beaten me to the punch, has more, more and more still.

UPDATE x3: Of course, liberals like this guy think none of this was important anyway.

Two of my fellow Bearflaggers stopped using Movable Type this week. Unfortunately, one of them quit blogging altogether. The other made the wise choice to move to WordPress. Go bid Andrew farewell, and if you use an aggregator, don’t forget to re-subscribe to Patterico.
