Easy For Him to Say

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:38 am

Patterico, a criminal prosecutor, says thanks but no thanks to the Lone Star Times’s generous offer to hand out press credentials to any blogger who wants one if the FEC’s dire predictions come true. Patterico, whose wife is a criminal prosecutor, whose colleagues are criminal prosecutors, and who is on friendly terms with countless other criminal prosecutors in the only county where would likely be prosecuted, has this to say (emphasis in original):

They’ll have to pry this keyboard from my cold dead hands before I am going to “register” with the government for permission to state my personal views without fear of prosecution.

Indeed.

Hell, I say enforce the damned thing against us.

As Lincoln put it: “The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly.” Maybe we can kill the whole damned McCain Feingold monster.

I assume this is tongue-in-cheek, but I also know you have some — some — dense readers who may not know that. So, for the record, there is no “you’re my buddy” exception to prosecution for crimes. Deputy DAs who commit crimes get prosecuted — albeit by a different office, to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

The point here is that blogging, and expressing your political opinions, cannot be a crime. If I link to John Kerry’s web site to show how he lies about his military record, are they calling that a contribution to John Kerry?? This is insanity. It can’t hapen in a society that calls itself free.

I know. Add to that the fact that this is a federal law which, presumably, would be enforced by the Federales rather than by the L.A. County’s D.A. office. But any blog entry by a prosecutor bragging about not being afraid of crminal prosecution is still funny, and I’m still going to have fun with it. Dammit.
