‘Cuz It Was Sooooo Popular the First Time

PUC is exhuming the bad idea that once made Robert Scheer prove the stopped clock theory, and is again considering an overlay for the 310 area code. Whoever came up with that moronic concept should be “overlayed” off.

The L.A. Times, which as recently as yesterday decried the nuclear constitutional no-filibuster option as an “attack on the judiciary,” has now come out today in favor of it. Matthew Hoy praises the paper for taking an allegedly principled stand, while Patterico suspects an armed takeover. Another possibility is that someone at the L.A. Times read Powerline, didn’t like what he saw, and figured the only thing he’d like less is to see a follow-up post featuring the L.A. Times itself rather than the Strib. [UPDATE: Kevin Murphy alludes to a similar but more benign theory in a comment.]

My take: none of the above. This is the Times’s famous “power of the jump,” in time rather than space. Like the Schwarzenegger hit piece that just “happened” to be ready for print four days before election day, this editorial, which could have run anytime, came at just the right time to accomplish certain things, without accomplishing other things.

Senator Frist appears to be all too eager to dump the “nuclear” option in favor of the “Thank you sir, may I have another?” option.

One of the nice things about living in America is that you have the freedom to criticize people who hate communism. Apparently, they have that freedom in Cuba, too.

Nobody Eats the Simpsons

A couple years back, everyone’s favorite cannibal, Armin Meiwes of Kassel, Germany, was inexplicably convicted of manslaughter rather than murder. Now, the Associated Press reports that he’s scored himself a new trial. Unfortunately for him, that doesn’t mean what it sounds like. Apparently, Germans don’t have to worry about that pesky double-jeopardy rule. If Justices Kennedy and O’Connor get wind of it, neither will we.
