Chirac in a Hard Place
So much for the EU as the latest, greatest counterpart to the U.S. Of his loss, Jacques Chirac said:
“It is your sovereign decision, and I take note,” Chirac said. “Make no mistake, France’s decision inevitably creates a difficult context for the defense of our interests in Europe.”
No poop, Poirot.

N.B.: Chirac only promises to take note of the vote. He later promises: “I want to tell you and our European partners, and all the peoples of Europe, that France will continue to occupy its place, whilst respecting its undertakings. I will ensure that.”
Prepare for the French government to attempt an end run around this vote; Chirac needs to hit a homerun if he is to go down as a great French president. He will fight hard for this constitution’s ratification.

…great French president.
Yeah, the competition for that title is intense, isn’t it?

McGehee,
Yeah, I completely missed the irony of the sentence when I was scribbling that post.
