Five Democrats Buck Party, Obey Constitution
It’s all over the news that Ass. Bill 19, Mark Leno’s blatantly unconstitutional gay marriage bill died yesterday, but the news media has been pretty inept at reporting on the fact that Mark Leno’s blatant unconstitutional gay marriage bill was blatantly unconstitutional. All Republicans who voted on the measured chose the constitutional option, but so did Democrats Juan Arambula (Fresno), Joe Baca (Rialto), Barbara Matthews (Tracy), Nicole Parra (Hanford) and Juan Vargas, (San Diego). In addition, Mike Gordon (El Segundo), Jerome Horton (Inglewood), Gloria Negrete McLeod (Chino), Mervyn Dymally (D-Compton), Simon Salinas (Salinas) and Tom Umberg (Los Angeles of Anaheim) did not vote at all.
Before getting too excited about the five Democratic constitutionalists and the six useful inactivists, let’s keep an eye on them and see how they vote on the Fake ID Act, SB 60 (more on that here) and the Guns Don’t Kill People, Bullets Kill People” Act, SB 357.

AD 17 (Tracy) has been moving Republican for a while now. Matthews did her party a huge favor. I bet this district would have flipped in ‘06 for sure if she votes the other way. Now, not so sure.
