I don't think Texas is the same, it sounds like the judge has the option to give a fixed sentence anywhere in the range of five years to life whereas in Utah the judge can only give a indeterminate sentence of 6 years to life leaving it up to the parole board how long is actually served. I wouldn't get too outraged until and unless the guy is actually released after 6 years. Parole boards tend to deny parole in high profile cases like this, look at how many times Sirhan Sirhan has been denied parole.

This is how sentencing in California used to be. Worse, due to ex post facto laws, it's the same way today for an old murder.

Is Utah the only state where unprovoked, premediated first degree murder gets you six years in prison and a stiff fine (only without the fine)?

damnum absque injuria

well, I don't know whether this was premeditated, but apparently you can murder in Texas and get away with only five years

The article does say "6 to life" (which seems like a pretty big range). It also says that it's up to the parole board to decide when he's been there enough.

The article tries to build sympathy for the poor lad, but I must have a heart of stone.

19 year-old gets life sentence for helping girlfri

So a panicky 19 year-old in Texas gets a mandatory life sentence for helping his willing girlfriend induce the miscarriage of twin fetuses and a cold blooded murderer in Utah gets 6 years to life.

Sickening. Just sickening.

It's stories like this that give me utter contempt for arguments against capital punishment.
