Cole’s Law

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 10:06 pm

Yesterday morning, before the ink was dry on Terri Schiavo’s autopsy report, John Cole ranted and raved about the “silence” of the pro-tubists in response to yesterday’s autopsy report, which apparently was supposed to prove Michael Schiavo is a great guy and that there is absolutely no possibility he misstated his estranged wife’s supposed intent. Dean Esmay rightly called him on it, and later in comments, so did I:

I said last but I lied. Between my entry and the rest of the ones cited here, can you at least admit you were wrong to prattle about the “silence” of those of us Schiavo supporters who had the unmitigated gall to actually wait an hour or two before weighing in in the nonstory du jour?

To which John wisely responded:

Gee, you got me there. I guess I was a little too quick on the draw, wasn’t I? My bad. Next time I feel like publishing something like that, I’ll save it as a draft, wait a day or two to see if my position is justified, and if it is, I’ll post it then.

No, wait, I almost forgot; he didn’t say that. That’s probably what he should have said, mind you, but it’s not what he did say, which was this:

Umm, right now I am channeling Carly Simon for some reason. I know who I had in mind when I wrote the post. I was thinking of Michelle Malkin and LaShawn Barber and a few others… Not you.

Apparently, John was quite fond of his and Carly’s strawman, so much so he also used it on Dean Esmay, who had also called him on his silly “silence” post and who also had never claimed the original post was about him. So fond of this brilliant rejoinder was he, that he didn’t even bother to first check to see if either of the named individuals had weighed in yet, as LaShawn had. The other, Michelle Malkin, appears to be guilty as charged, having committed the cardinal sin of giving herself one whole day to actually read the damned report before weighing in on it.

So far, that makes John 0 for 2, a boner which has not yet been addressed in his original post, despite the fact that it has been updated to throw snot at Dean – again, long after one of the two referenced bloggers had broken her non-silence, and before personally lashing out (h/t: Patterico) at the other over her non-silence since. Apparently, gross errors are something for which everyone except John (or perhaps everyone except Dean Esmay, Carly Simon and me) is supposed to apologize.

John has a tolerant attitude towards his visitors–and I’ve certainly tested that tolerance–but he is truly a hot-head.

The blood pounding in his ears deafens him to reason, sometimes. To read him, you’d think the entire case for not snuffing out Terri Schiavo consisted of allegations of abuse against Michael, and that folks hoping to save her life–or mere existance–were certain she was just getting some shut eye.

I believe the central issue in this case was the government’s right to intervene in family matters and make life and death decisions regardless of that family’s wishes. The autopsy report did nothing to clarify nor resolve this issue but did leave some issues unaddressed.

Too often some bloggers demonstrate their stance is the only correct one despite the contradictions they display. Mr. Cole’s stance on certain issues has grown uncomfortably fammiliar to those of people like Mr. Sullivan or Willis. Such positions become not only predictable but tiresome.

[...] It is an old Internet trick to decry the “suspicious silence” of your ideological opponents regarding news that appeared a couple of hours ago. This trick was used by John Cole when the Terri Schiavo autopsy came out. But the pinnacle of the format was achieved by our friend Thomas Ellers, known by some as Glenn Greenwald, who excoriated a few of us for not denouncing a blogger calling himself “Emperor Misha” — for comments made while most of us were asleep, getting ready for work, and/or working. When Greenwald pulled this trick, I called him a “douchebag.” That was neither restrained nor civil of me, but many have called it accurate. [...]
