That certainly happens. A couple years back, during that brouhaha over women golfers at the Masters, a West Virginia paper fell for “Heywood Jablome.” Maybe this is another example of that?

I think sometimes people give reporters made up names to mess with them. One time a caption in my local paper identified a guy as Hugh Janus. I was going to send it to Leno, but I could never figure out the address for that.
