Harriet Who?
While Americal Center for Law and Justice Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow lauds President Bush over his “excellent choice” (is there any other kind?) to nominate Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, David Frum calls it an error, and an “unforced” one at that (i.e., an error that cannot be explained away by political necsesity or even expediency), Rush Limbaugh needed Dick Cheney to assure him everything would be all right, maybe, and Bill Kristol described himself as “disappointed, depressed and demoralized” over the nomination. Here in the blawgosphere, Beldar is optimistic, but Spoons is reserving judgment, and Patterico is angry as a Clam. Even Hugh Hewitt, the eternal optimist and veteran cheerleader for all things Bush, can’t find it in him to offer her anything better than a B+. Perhaps most damningly of all, RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman sent me an email advising me that “Harriet Miers Needs Your Help.” Good God. If any national figure needs my help, our country is in serious trouble indeed.
Between this nomination, Julie Myers, Michael Brown and too many others to count, I think it’s time for voters to demand that this President Bush turn the tables on the other President Bush and for once read our lips: no new cronyism.
UPDATE: Heh.
UPDATE x2: Nice heading. I promise I didn’t steal it from either of these guys.
UPDATE x3: But see Eugene Volokh’s historical perspective.
UPDATE x4: Then again, maybe she ain’t all bad.
UPDATE x5: On the original hand, taking six years to complete law school strikes me as a bit much.
UPDATE x6: Heh.

i am reserving judgement until I know more. It would be really sad if she was a reasonably qualified candidate and just happens to be friends with the Prez.

I’m amused, and trying to keep an open mind, but i’m skeptical; it seems like the prototypical crony appointment.

Not quite typical. Many cronies are qualified.

I saw over on Political Teen that Cheney was on Sean Hannity’s show talking up Miers too. So obviously there’s an effort here to shore up conservative support for her.
The “croneyism” tag doesn’t mean much to me–Presidents and Governors typically hire people the like, know, and trust. Volokh seems to have the right of it to me.

The Miers Nomination
I keep saying I’m not all that interested in the debates over Supreme Court nominations. I guess that’s not true, since I do follow the news and the argumetns. I just don’t feel a strong emotional investment in the matter. If Joh…
