White Hot

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 12:01 am

Dean must be stoked. At this point, I’m rooting for the Sox to win tomorrow night, too. That way, my Angels will get at least some sort of bragging rights consolation prize for being the only team to beat the White Sox in the 2005 post-season - at all. Go White Sox!

But if the series ends tomorrow, Joe Morgan will be robbed of the chance to point out even more that there are no African-Americans on the Astros and how disapoinitng it is to him.

  2. Xrlq Says:

Heh. I also understand that two of the ChiSox are Cuban defectors whose very mention makes Fidel Castro cry. It would be too bad to miss three more opportunities for that, but it’s a small price to pay for the Angels retaining some sort of dignity.

To be fair to Morgan, he’s never to my knowledge implied that the lack of African-American players on the Astros — or their declining numbers in baseball in general — can be attributed to some form of discrimination or institutional racism. Heck, the Astros’ bench coach, Cecil Cooper, is African-American, and there were several on the regular-season Astros roster at various times. There just don’t happen to be any right now.

No, Morgan’s complaint — probably a justifiable one — is that baseball isn’t doing nearly as good a job at attracting inner-city youth as are baseball and football. In other words, it’s not really a racial issue, but a social one.

Er…I’m pretty sure baseball is doing just as good of a job at attracting inner-city youth as baseball is. Perhaps you meant to say “baseketball?”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I meant. :) Basketball and football.

Meanwhile, from the direction of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, a soft “thud” is heard.

What has mustard got to do with anything? (If you’ve never been and get a chance, you should go. Not something to travel 1,000 miles out of your way for, of course, but 100 miles, sure. And as a bonus, there is — or at least used to be — a great Brew pub right around the corner…)
