It’s All About the Children

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 12:45 pm

My next door neighbors, government school teachers both, have a CTA/NEA-issued sign on their front yard urging voters to “Protect Our Kids” by voting “no” on Propositions 74, 75 and 76. It sure is nice to know that the National Extortion Association wants to protect our kids from good teachers, depoliticized unions and balanced budgets.

Also good to know that educators really understand the issues and can communicate them so unmistakably.

Just yesterday I got a flyer in the mail from the “NON-PARTISAN CANDIDATE EVALUATION COUNCIL, INC.,” which prominently touts,

“Your Conservative Voting Guide for 41 Years.” “California’s oldest and largest VOTING GUIDE going to conservative voters for over four decades. NPCEC is a non-profit volunteer organization comprised of active voters who believe in honest and efficient government.”

This “conservative voting guide,” which believes in “honest and efficient government,” gives the most space to OPPOSING Prop. 77:

“Stop this costly mid-decade redistricting of retired, but surely political judges. Republicans: Proposition 77 is a terrible mistake.” “DON’T GIVE UP YOUR POWER!”

Without having heard of them it’s hard to say if they’re (1) a legitimate outfit that’s simply wrong on 77, (2) a front for some group that only cares about undermining Prop 77, and will happily feign support for the rest to build conservatives’ trust, or (3) just another one of those companies that sells its “endorsements” to the highest bidder. Last minute crap like this is one of the reasons I always vote by mail at least a week before the election.

    Xrlq,

Dead ringer; it looks like option (2).

The link you included matches the flyer’s own website:

After receiving the Orange County version of the mailer today, I think it’s pretty clear that option (3) is the ticket. The first thing that tipped me off was their endorsement of Measure D, which the firefighters have been pushing in a big way but which no serious conservative (nor any anti-77 shill attempting to pose as one) would be likely to endorse unless you paid him. But the real give away is this disclaimer at the end:

    NOTICE TO VOTERS

This DOCUMENT WAS PREPARED BY THE NON-PARTISAN CANDIDATE EVALUATION COUNCIL, INC., NOT AN OFFICIAL POLITICAL PARTY ORGANIZATION. Appearance in this mailer does not necessarily imply endorsement of others appearing in this mailer, nor does it imply endorsement of, or opposition to, any issues set forth in this mailer. Appearance is paid for and authorized by each candidate and ballot measure which is designated by an *.

All of their endorsements on props 73 through 77 have asterisks, and so does their endorsement for Measure D. They’re not ideologues of any stripe; there just in this to make a buck.
