Apparently, this leaving California thing is catching on. Last one out, turn out the lights. Thanks to reader John Vecchione for the link.

I am by no means a productive Californian, but I am joining you in VA as soon as I get the chance!

  2. Xrlq Says:

    Cool! Whereabouts in VA?

  3. See-Dubya Says:

Given our financial situation, we will be moving in with you! Thanks for the offer!

  4. Geoffrey Says:

I need to start a “leaving Massachusetts” trend. This state is killing me.

  5. Steverino Says:

I left CA 5 years ago. it’s good for the soul :)

    Bring the flag.

XRLQ – i’ve been reading articles about flight from California for more than a decade. It’s certainly nothing new.

That doesn’t mean that I’d exchange California for Virginia under any circumstances — but, I suppose, tastes differ. :)

  8. Xrlq Says:

Yeah, well, I also left the state in 1993, which was more than a decade ago. So there.

As to CA vs. VA, I’ll trade a commie state for a free state any day of the week. You can have our governor, though. And we’ll take yours, too. He talks funny, so he’ll fit right in.

  9. Steverino Says:

Oh yeah? Well, I left California for the first time in 1988 :)

I like Virginia, but it’s much too humid for me to consider living there. I’m just fine here in Northern Nevada — a free state that’s trying to remain free despite the influx of Californians.

Then again, I also left the state in 1981, 1987 and 1989, just to name the three times I stayed out for at least a year. But I didn’t count those initially, as each of those stints was for a fixed period, as opposed to leaving the state without knowing if I’d ever be back, or when.

Good luck keeping Nevada free. Virginia is too far east to be in any danger of californication, but it does face a risk similar to what made California the way it is in the first place: an influx of northeasterners. Without them help, California would be just another free, western state. With too many of them, Virginia could end up going that same route. Yuck.
