Legal, Illegal, What’s the Diff?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 10:04 pm

I recently got in a political debate with some psycho from Siberia. He started off by railing about what a hypocrite William Bennett is, railing about the evils of crack cocaine and all, when everybody know he’s a pharmacist himself. My friend John chimed in, asking WTF his being a pharmacist had to do with anything. Psycho-Man responded, “C’mon, he claims to be against drug dealers ‘n’ shit, yet he deals drugs himself! What’s up with that?” John responded patiently that selling drugs legally to those who have a legitimate need for them is different from standing on a street corner and illegally selling them to any junkie who wants them. Psycho-dude said “no way, man. Drugs are drugs. Anyone claims to be against drugs but also sells drugs himself is a hypocrite, dude.”

Finally, I’d had all I could take. I said “Hey moron, even if legal and illegal drug sales were the same, you’d still be full of crap because William Bennett isn’t a pharmacist after all! Put that in your ‘hypocrite’ pipe and smoke it.” Psycho-Dude responded, “OK, you get 1/100th of a point there. He may not be a pharmacist himself, but someone in his family surely is. Besides, he looks the part, what more do you want?”

Far-fetched? Not really.

Poor Psyberian. I can’t say anything. Even though my heart was in the right place I was a more incoherent fool in that thread than he was.

You’ve said that several times, but I’m not sure why. Your comments sounded reasonable enough to me.

I kept mixing up “P” and “Psy”, referring in both instances to Psyberian, without noticing that Patterico was signing sometimes as “P.” so that it looked like I was arguing against both Psyberian and Patterico (especially bad when I used the word “Bubba”). I learned my lesson: Comment number and full name from now on.

I know, but compared to Psycho’s intentional mixing of legal and illegal, immigrants and non-immigrants, his ass and a hole in the ground, etc., I’d put your minor mixup in the category of mice-nuts.

I didn’t even notice that. I guess I was a little distracted by the Sunday golfing Limbaugh thing. If I were to question his bona-fides, it’d be over the cigars. What a cartoonish affectation!

Dave Munger, Comment #5. That was just plain meanness on my part. I was feeling really nasty. And Rush asked for the comparison when he asked why people live conservative lives and vote liberal.
