But She’s a Witch!

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:10 pm

It’s too early to declare anyone guilty or innocent of rape, but I don’t think it’s too early to declare Mike Nifong guilty of being a chump.

ReasonTMably Mindless Snark

The Puppy Blender finally learns what some of us have been saying for years.

UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers! Yes, that means both of you. This has got to be the lamest Insta-non-lanche I’ve seen in years. Oh well, I still give Glenn my thanks, and an A for effort. Xrlq Goldstein has more.

Answers to Saturday’s Quote Quiz

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:48 am

Below are the answers to Saturday’s quote quiz. Theme at end.

  1. “Lessons,” by Rush, from 2112.
  2. “The Marshall Plan,” by Blue Oyster Cult, from Cultosaurus Erectus.
  3. “Portrait (He Knew),” by Kansas, from Point of Know Return.
  4. “Baba O’Reilly,” by The Who, from Who’s Next. Credit also given for “Baba O’Riley,” which is apparently a misspelling of the intended title, which was named after one of Pete Townshend’s cousins. A competing theory is that the original spelling was correct, and that the reference was to Terry Riley. I don’t pretend to know which theory is correct, if either, so I’ll give full credit to both spellings.
  5. “Paranoid,” by Black Sabbath, from Paranoid. Full credit for anyone who identified the album by the name “War Pigs,” the title of the first track and the intended title of the album (which, you may notice, also fits much better with the cover).
  6. “Epic,” by Faith No More, from The Real Thing.
  7. “The Spirit of Radio,” by Rush, from Permanent Waves.
  8. “The Trooper,” by Iron Maiden, from Piece of Mind.
  9. “Dogs,” by Pink Floyd,” from Animals.
  10. “…And Justice for All,” by Metallica, from …And Justice for All.

THEME: Songs with counter-intuitive titles that appear nowhere in the lyrics. As a result, these songs are frequently referred to by incorrect titles, e.g., “Portrait (He Knew)” is frequently cited simply as “He Knew,” Baba O’Reilly/O’Riley as “Teenage Wasteland,” etc. The former is a sore spot for me, having fallen into that trap myself not once, but twice, while taking Patterico’s quizzes.

Frank Lautenberg’s Thuggery

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 7:37 pm

Via Say Uncle, David Hardy has the goods on how Frank Lautenberg’s gun law and Timothy Emerson’s adulterous and mendacious ex have conspired to destroy him. Truly disgusting, especially when you consider that Emerson’s case was the “good” Second Amendment case.

Lambert’s Lies Continue to Unravel

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 7:18 pm

Via Uncly-Wuncly, alleged John Lott sock/meat puppet Jim Purtilo details the smears he has gotten from Tim Lambert, a hack blogger at least some credulous conservatives mysteriously continue to cite as an authority.

LASIK on the Cheap

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:49 pm

If you’re like me, you’ve had LASIK but still can’t see the brilliant and self-evident truths behind Debbie Schlussel’s musings. Then again, maybe we just didn’t know where to get it (h/t: Snopes).

Can Tawana Brawley Get a Scholarship Too?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:43 pm

Jesse Jackson and his PUSHers have offered free tuition to the alleged victim of an alleged rape by three alleged members of Duke’s allegedly existent lacross team. That seems like a very decent thing to do, should the charges ultimately prove true, or even if they proved “fake-but-accurate,” (e.g., if it were ultimately determined that she was in fact assaulted by someone who was not actually a member of the lacrosse team, but whom she had honestly mistaken for one). Unfortunately, Jackson doesn’t care about that:

No one has been charged in the case, but the allegations have rocked the community. Jackson he has yet to speak with the woman, but said his group pledged to pay for her tuition even if her story proves false.

Lovely.

Homeless in the O.C.?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:31 pm

Casa de Xrlq is on the market. Also available, independently of the house, are a perfectly good washer and dryer, which we did not bring to Virginia because we (1) wanted a front-loading washer and (2) needed an electric dryer.

Sam’s Club v. Costco

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:25 pm

Anyone had experiences with both? I’ve been a Costco member for years, but my membership is due to expire soon and they’re both located almost exactly the same distance from home.

Too Clever By Halb?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 8:56 pm

Can someone please explain the intended message of this PSA?

It looks like they’re saying, “If you save too much power, some German-speaking hog will think you’re dumb,” but I’m not sure I grasp the significance of that.
