Indeed, the AR-15 on the right is the assault weapon under California law by dint of its "conspicuously protruding" pistol grip. Additionally, assuming that's a flash hider rather than a muzzle break, that would have rendered it an evil baby-killing rifle under the now-defunct federal AW ban.

Actually, the one on the left is a Ruger Mini-14, which is not considered an "assault" weapon under either California law or the now-defunct federal one (there would be an issue in Cali with the magazine size). On the right is an AR-15, which is an "assault" weapon. Same functionality, same caliber, etc. I understand the AR-15 is more accurate, if I can just find a local range that will let me shoot it.

I would hope that the Armalite on the right is the legal one and the Kalashnikov on the left the illegal. I am not too familiar with either of the bullet wasters. I like bolt actions. I did own an Egyptian AK for a short time but I gave it away because it was giving me patterns instead of groups. I have heard that the .223 is a wonderfully accurate cartridge but I have never shot one. My rifles have been .308, 30-06, 8mm and the disposed of 7.62x39, and they have all been put aside for the indefinite time being.
