Cheap Router

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:49 am

If you’re in the market for a router, this is a very good deal. I’ve had that brand for almost a year now, and it’s worked flawlessly. That’s more than I can say for the Linksys router it replaced.

As a long-time network technologist, I’m partial to this router.

Much more power, far fewer problems, and better customer support. Seriously.

I had a Linksys router that was a piece of crap. WEP (encryption) would simply stop working and I’d have to reboot the router. One day, I had to reboot the router and it never came back. So I went and got a Netgear one, and I haven’t had any problems since.

Other people I know have had issues with Linksys. Cisco makes good products on the commercial/business side but their Linksys line is absolute crap.

As you might recall, xrlq, I had an older Linksys router running during my election party, and it was constantly needing a reboot. Probably due to overload of its NAT table, since it seemed to be upset at the massive infoflow 15 bloggers demanded.

Then I “upgraded” the firmware, or attempted to. It hung up midway through the flash update and never worked again.

I’m now using a Netgear WGR614(v6) and it works flawlessly. Of course, it hasn’t had the blogger attack test yet.

I saw the same special ($14.99 for CompUSA WiFi router) last week and purchased one of the routers at a nearby CompUSA. The router has been working perfectly for 5 days straight.

It replaced a Linksys WRT54G V5.0 router. The Linksys router wasn’t reliable. I had to restart it every other day.
