It’s the Beginning of the World as He Knows It

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 12:31 pm

And we feel fine. Pics of all 8 pounds 13.8 ounces and 19.5 inches of him to follow soon. Bonus points for the first commenter who can correctly guess the county of Xrlq 3.0’s birth.

UPDATE: It was a trick question, but commenter AMac nailed it.

UPDATE x2: A commenter at Patterico questions the timing of this announcement. Heh.

  2. SayUncle Says:

    Congrats!

  3. caltechgirl Says:

    Orange?? Just kidding.

Congrats! And give the Mrs. a big hug for me!

  4. Joel Says:

Congrats X! Uh well the only county I know in Virginia is Fauquier, because you mentioned it, so maybe that one.

  5. Xrlq Says:

CTG, Joel: Good guess, but it’s a good hour and a half away from there.

  6. MichaelW Says:

Congrats, Xrlq! And I’m guessing Henrico.

  7. Xrlq Says:

Thanks! Henrico is the best guess so far, but as Bill said to Monica’s replacement, that was close but no cigar.

  8. Anwyn Says:

    Thought it was Xrlqville?

CONGRATULATIONS! And good wishes to Mrs. Xrlq for a speedy recovery.

  9. Hube Says:

X — Congrats! My guess: Fairfax? Montgomery?

How blessed to be born a Virginian and not a Californian.

Congratulations to you and your bride.

  12. Pablo Says:

I just want to know what his name is. I’m partial to Zgtrq.

    Congratulations to the Xrlq household.

  13. CraigC Says:

    Congrats, Mr. Q. Chesterfield?

  15. Xrlq Says:

Anwyn: nah, Xrlqville is in the sticks. They don’t have electricity or running water there, let alone hospitals. OK, so they do have Fred’s Bank, I’ll give them that, but still…

    Hube: Sorry, too far north.

Pablo: For all I know, there probably is a Zgtrq County somewhere in Virginia, and if I knew where it was, I probably would have arranged for him to be born there.

Craig: See my earlier comment about Monica’s replacement and the missing cigar.

  16. Jody Says:

    Dinwiddie?

I can keep guessing counties all day. It is a finite set…

    And congrats…

  17. Xrlq Says:

A good guess, but again not correct.

Time for Clue #1: when I finally reveal the answer, most Virginian readers who know what part of the state I live in will slap themselves on the forehead saying “Of course, why didn’t I get that!” while non-Virginian readers will invariably scratch their heads and say, “Huh?”

  18. AMac Says:

Hmm, are Virginia’s independent cities parts of counties? Up here, the state constitution makes one and only one city (Baltimore) into its own quasi-county.

    So I’ll guess Richmond.

  19. SayUncle » Congrats Says:

[...] To Xrlq on the new addition. [...]

  20. Xrlq Says:

Bingo. According to Wikipedia, 39 of the 42 independent cities in the USA are located in Virginia. In fact, “independent city” is almost a redundant phrase in this commonwealth, as all cities (as opposed to towns) are independent of counties, by definition. Xrlq 3.0 was born in the City of Richmond, and therefore, in no county.

  21. Publicola Says:

    X,
congrats to you & the little lady. Now stop breeding - there are enough damned lawyers1 (j/k) :)

  22. Anwyn Says:

Independent cities, huh? How does that work? Do you think it works well?

  23. Rustmeister Says:

    Grats!

  24. Les Jones Says:

Congrats. And if you’re still searching for a name, Thundaar is still available.

  25. Xrlq Says:

Publicola, that’s a fair point. OTOH, while we need fewer lawyers in general, don’t we need more gun-slingin’, Southern by the grace of Dad’s employer lawyers?

Anywyn: Basically, the city runs everything. Functionally, it’s no different from San Francisco, which is technically both a city and a county, with a unified government controlling both. Also compare NYC, which spans five counties. To the best of my knowledge, county governments don’t do all that much in most incorporated municipalities, anyway. They do much more here because state law prohibits the incorporation of new towns in a county whose popoulation density exceeds 1,000 per square mile. This means no municipalities at all in Henrico County, which mostly surrounds the City of Richmond, and none I’m aware of in Chesterfield County, which covers the rest.

  26. Not Exactly Rocket Science Says:

    Congratulations!…

To Xrlq and the lovely Mrs. X on the birth of their second son, Xrlq 3.0!  And also to big brother Xrlq 2.0……

  27. AMac Says:

And yet more congrats on the happy tidings, Xrlq and Mrs. Xrlq.

  28. Anwyn Says:

I am not just Anywyn, dammit, I am the Onlywyn. Except maybe Larwyn over at Ace’s. Seriously, I almost registered anywyn.com when I was throwing up my hands in frustration at trying to get anwyn.com registered, because it’s such a common typo and cute pun at the same time.

ANYway, gotcha re city/county. I’m in an unincorporated part of a county myself; our cops are the sherriff’s guys, to the best of my knowledge. I don’t know enough of the details as to how it works; i.e. our schools are the schools of the nearest suburb, but I don’t know how our property taxes are divvied up, because our mailing address is the big city, not the small suburb. Weirdness.
