News in Briefs

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 6:37 pm

Here are a few interesting tidbits I picked up today:

  1. The hurricane deficit continues to mount, and now hurricane forecaster William Gray predicts there will be no major hurricanes for the rest of the year. I blame George W. Bush.
  2. A clown is running for mayor in Alameda, California. For some reason, both Drudge and the Ass. Press think that is news.
  3. The New York Times has a real bombshell, in which they partially confirm Bob Woodward’s explosive charge that then-CIA Director George Tenet briefed then-National Secuirty Advisor Condoleeza Rice about the impending 9-11 attack months before it happened, only to be brushed off. Of course, the only part they can confirm is that the briefing occurred, not that Tenet felt (or even that Dick Ben Veniste felt that he felt) that he’d been brushed off.
  4. In a similar vein, James Frey has confirmed that some parts of Chapter Four of his infamous book really are true: namely, it really the fourth chapter in the book, and he really does have parents. That’s not good enough for his critics, however. Many of the ex-addicts his book has helped now feel as though they’ve been betrayed by this complete stranger they’ve deluded themselves into thinking was a personal friend or something. They’re mad as hell, and they’re demanding their addictions … er, I mean, money back.

I don’t particularly care about Tenet feeling brushed off by Condi; as far as I’m concerned, the right thing to do after 9/11 was to not point fingers, to admit that pretty much everyone had missed the plot, and to figure out what to do about it.

I’m *really pissed off*, though, that the fact that that meeting occurred was somehow omitted from the 9/11 commission report. It was a significant enough event that it belonged there, and the fact that it was ommitted forces me to wonder what else was omitted, and leaves me uncertain I can trust it at all.
