Allen v. Web Gunbattle

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 11:22 pm

VCDL has a last minute alert for everyone who’s trying to decide between Allen and Webb on Second Amendment grounds. I’m passing it along without comment, except for one minor update which I also received from VCDL.

There is a desperate tug-of-war going on over gun owners between
George Allen and Jim Webb. They know that YOU may well be the
deciding votes! (YOU MUST VOTE ON TUESDAY.)

BREAKING NEWS: I have just learned that George Allen has committed
*in writing* to submitting a bill to repeal that National Park ban
right after the election! Here is the quote from the letter:

“On the issue of repeal of the gun ban in National Parks, I have been
a strong advocate for repeal of the ban, and have - for months -
urged the Secretary of the Interior to take action. Since no action
has been taken, I will introduce legislation in the Senate the week
of November 13 to repeal the gun ban. If this does not rapidly
precipitate an administrative repeal, I will use every means I can to
get a vote on the legislation by the Senate.”

URGENT! TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE RIGHT NOW

Both campaigns are working overtime. I need to you to do the
following things NOW, even if it is late night or early morning
Saturday, Sunday or Monday when you get this. I need you to CALL,
not email, as time is short and there is much at stake. This is a
historic opportunity that has landed in our laps:

1. Call the Allen campaign (numbers are at the end) and:

* Ask Senator Allen to commit to getting S. 3275 (National
Concealed Carry Reciprocity) a vote on the Floor in short order after
the election and to fight to make it law

* Ask Senator Allen to post his NRA survey so gun owners can see
his answers, just like Jim Webb did.
Tell him he can fax the survey
and
a letter committing to get S. 3275 a Floor vote soon after the
election to VCDL at: 804-739-8376 [UPDATE: he's already sent the survey, and it was 100% pro-gun, slightly better than Webb's on the "gun show loophole" issue, and identical to Webb's on all other counts.]

2. Call the Jim Webb campaign (numbers are at the end) and:

* Ask Jim Webb to fill out the GOA survey and make it public so gun
owners can see it. They can fax that survey and letter committing to
the items below to VCDL at: 804-739-8376

* Ask Jim Webb to clarify what he means by his proposal to have a
“National Concealed Carry Permit.” Is it actually a federal permit
or is it national reciprocity for concealed carry permits issued by
any state? We prefer the latter as it leaves states to set their own
standards for permits.

* Ask Jim Webb to clarify his answer on the NRA survey (6b) about
further restricting gun shows by requiring private sales to be
cleared through the government. Surely he doesn’t want to restrict
gun shows more than they already are, does he?

* Ask Jim Webb to commit to opposing Patrick Leahy as Chairman of the
Judiciary in the event that Democrats take over the Senate. Patrick
Leahy would be bad news for gun owners.

    Sorry Xrlq,

Given a choice between a Supreme Court which might overturn Roe v. Wade and one more vote against more federal restrictions on gun rights, I vote for a Supreme Court which might overturn Roe v. Wade. Allen. (The question is academic in my case since I’m in Illinois. Just talkin’.)

  2. SayUncle » Guns in Va Says:

[...] The Allen v. Webb battle of who is more gun-nutty continues. I liked Webb’s response to the questionnaire here as it’s good to see a politician not talk about guns and duck hunting. And Allen has a strong record on gun rights, as the only thing I could find is a statement that he opposes absolute right to gun ownership. But then, who doesn’t? [...]

Here in Pennsylvania, at least on my ballot, the 2A is not an issue. With the exception of our governor right off the Soporanos, Fast Eddie Rendell, every candidate on the ballot in both parties got As.

Course, this is central Pennsylvania. Gun nuts doesn’t even begin to cover it here. Hehehe.
