Allah’s Surreal, Moronic Blog Post

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 8:18 pm

Allah joins the global war on Lite-Brites, denouncing innocent marketers as “hoaxsters” and demanding an apology from them for their innocent marketing stunt, rather than from the Governor of Massachusetts, the mayor of Boston and the Boston PD for being dumber than a metric ton of retard concentrate.

Next up: calls for apologies from Joel Surnow, Robert Cochran, Kiefer Sutherland and the Fox network for laying the groundwork for this non-hoax with a TV show that implies all devices with wires (including the one in yours hands if you can read this) are bombs.

UPDATE: Allah has removed the reference to “hoaxers.” Apparently, my failure to update this post accordingly in real time constitutes a greenwald in Allah’s book. Whatever, dude.

UPDATE x2: Et tu, Ace. And unlike Allah, Ace hasn’t even gotten rid of the libelous reference to these two Kucher wannabes as “hoaxers,” despite his own admission that they haven’t hoaxed anyone. Jeebus. Is there some aspect to this story that just isn’t getting covered on the West Coast (where I’m visiting at the moment – more on that later), or did everything but California finally fall into the ocean?

UPDATE x3: Time to update the Lite-Brite jingle. My recommendation: “Lite Brite, a cheap gift from your mom. Outtasite, some dumbshits think it’s a bomb.”

  1. Allah Says:

Not even going to mention that I said they committed no crime — twice — or that I actually changed the headline in response to someone else’s objection about the word “hoaxer”? How positively Greenwaldian of you, X.

My point was that they came off as dicks in their press conference. Which, by the way, they did.

  2. Wulf Says:

Of course they came off like dicks. That’s their job. They generate publicity for the show. Clearly they are very good at it.

Why should they treat the media whilrwind as serious? Good for them for daring to be irreverent to the most self-righteous group of dicks on the planet. And generate more publicity for their show, to boot.

  3. Anwyn Says:

I’m surprised they *didn’t* do anything illegal. How about putting up unauthorized adverts on public throughways? Guess not. Gues it will be, though, in future.

  4. nk Says:

OK, fine, family fight. But what’s really important: I cannot access Patterico or Big Lizards for the last three hours. Is WordPress down again?

  5. Anwyn Says:

I’m thinking neither site is dependent on a Wordpress site for operation.

  6. nk Says:

Well, can you try to access either and tell me whether I’m not doing something right?

  7. Anwyn Says:

No, it’s not you, I can’t reach them either.

  8. Anwyn Says:

Hosting Matters appears to be down. That would down Patterico; not sure about Lizards.

  9. nk Says:

Michelle Malkin and Hot Air are still up. Let’s see.

  10. Anwyn Says:

I don’t think Hot Air is on Hosting Matters.

  11. nk Says:

It is Hosting Matters. “Proudly powered by WordPress”. I guess they will tell us what’s happening, tomorrow.

  12. Xrlq Says:

My point was that they came off as dicks in their press conference. Which, by the way, they did.

Your opinion. To me, the greater dicks by far were the idiot cops and mayor who panicked, made asses of themselves, and are now threatening criminal prosecution for two individuals who, by your own admission, have committed no crime. Nor can they be fairly said to have “frightened” anyone, advertently or inadvertently. Their only sin was assuming that Bostonians are as sensible and mentally stable as the rest of us.

  13. Anwyn Says:

nk: “HotAir.com is powered by WordPress. Hosting is provided by Rackspace and CacheFly.” –About page.

My blog’s powered by WordPress too. Doesn’t mean we’re *on* a Wordpress system, like you are on Blogger. Different.

  14. Xrlq Says:

Exactly. Adding further confusion is the fact that many WordPress blogs are on WordPress, as he is on Blogsplat. Mostly newbies, though, as Wordpress.com hasn’t been hosting blogs all that long.

IOW, “powered by WordPress” just means that you’re running the WordPress software. This site is powered by WordPress, too.

  15. Anwyn Says:

And cops being [etc.] somehow makes it less [etc.-y] to [etc.] the press and the public around during a press conference?

  16. Anwyn Says:

    So nk, to sum up:

Patterico’s site uses WordPress software but is hosted by Hosting Matters, which is down.

Hot Air, Xrlq, and Anwyn.com also use WordPress software but are NOT hosted by Hosting Matters, nor by WordPress. Hot Air is hosted by Rackspace and Cachefly, while Xrlq and I are hosted by ICDSoft. (Xrlq, best recommendation evah.)

Any blog you see with a URL like this:

likethis.wordpress.com *is* hosted by WordPress, as well as running on their software, in the same way you’re on Blogspot.

    Any questions? :)

  17. Anwyn Says:

Damn it, Lileks runs on Hosting Matters too. No Bleat a day early for me.

I love Lite Brite. I bought one for my son like two years ago even though he won’t be old enough to use it for at least three more years. :P

  18. Patterico Says:

My site has been down all night. I assume it’s a Hosting Matters issue; I tried writing them but their site is also down.

X, calling Allah’s post “moronic” is over the top. You’re playing off his title; I get that. But he said they did nothing illegal. And where did he demand an apology???

From what little I know about this, the cops sound like idiots. But the guys at the press conference sound like even bigger idiots.

  19. Xrlq Says:

Anwyn, I wouldn’t talk about that publicly if I were you. Maybe your governor will go apeshit and press charges against you! We’re fighting a global war against Lite-Brites, dammit.

  20. Xrlq Says:

X, calling Allah’s post “moronic” is over the top. You’re playing off his title; I get that.

Apparently, you don’t. My whole point was that his reference to the marketers was over the top. Goose, gander, etc.

But he said they did nothing illegal. And where did he demand an apology???

He didn’t say “I hereby demand that these guerilla marketer I previously libeled as hoax(st)ers apologize,” but it doesn’t take too much between-the-line-reading to infer as much from this:

They frightened thousands, brought a city to a halt, then redeemed themselves with a bit of absurdist tedium that instantly won the hearts of left-wing Internet nerds everywhere.

    Particularly when combined with this:

Nothing, probably, but a little less dickishness at the presser after having inadvertently caused a terror scare would have been appreciated.

This does not look good, and it looks even worse when you note that (1) the original post didn’t even acknowledge that the two hadn’t broken the law (that admission only came in response to another blogger asking what all the fuss was about), (2) even after that admission, Allah can’t find it in his heart to say a single bad word about the authorities for filing criminal charges Allah knows to be bogus, and (3) even after all the updates and his snotty comment to my allegedly greenwaldian post, Allah still places all the blame on these two marketers, not the idiot authorities, for the huge, unnecessary panic every major city except Boston had the good sense to avoid.

  21. Patterico Says:

Apparently, you don’t. My whole point was that his reference to the marketers was over the top. Goose, gander, etc.

Yes. I get it. Like I said.

I think these guys *were* dicks.

  22. Xrlq Says:

You’re entitled to your opinion. Mine is that they gave both the topic and the journalists all the respect they deserved under the circumstances, which is none. If some idiot D.A. had filed equally retarded charges against me, I’d have handled it the same way, except that I’d have picked a different irrelevant topic to answer questions about.

I also think that Allah was a Class A dick – to them.

  23. Anwyn Says:

Well, boys, should I make some popcorn? Or could we, possibly, all agree that A) The guys acted like [etc.s] at the press conference, B) Calling them “hoaxters” was a bit much; “pranksters” still is, and since Allah asked for suggestions in the comments, I hereby submit “asshole too-creative marketers”, and C) leaving blinky unauthorized electronics lying around public areas is an asshole thing to do? Okay, no, probably not (C), that’s just me. (A) and (B), though? Anyone?

  24. Anwyn Says:

Mine is that they gave both the topic and the journalists all the respect they deserved under the circumstances, which is none.

    There goes (A).

If some idiot D.A. had filed equally retarded charges against me, I’d have handled it the same way,

I think “disorderly conduct” is a reasonable charge. Hoax device, maybe not so much. No category yet for “being an asshole.”

  25. Xrlq Says:

Anwyn, if being an asshole ever becomes a crime, you’d better watch your own back. No, I don’t think you’re an asshole, but I do think you’re a conservative residing in Oregon, which is all it would take to sustain a conviction by a jury of your peers.

  26. Xrlq Says:

And yes, some popcorn would be nice.

  27. Anwyn Says:

You’d be surprised how many “God Bless America” and “Bush ‘04″ stickers there are around here. I might get off with a little lucky jury selection. Besides, who says Oregon liberals are my peers?

  28. Anwyn Says:

Damn it, *Wikipedia* is down. I know *they* don’t run on Hosting Matters. What the hell goes on tonight? You’re up pretty late, Xrlq.

  29. Xrlq Says:

No later than you. I’m in Cali right now, sans passport.

  30. Anwyn Says:

Wiki is up. Must’ve been a glitch on my side. Sans passport … to do what? Get back to America? :)

  31. Xrlq Says:

I will, soon. Sr. Xrlq’s in the hospital right now, so I’m here to hold down the fort for a couple of weeks.

  32. Anwyn Says:

So sorry to hear that. I hope he’ll be okay.

  33. Xrlq Says:

Thanks, I hope so too but it will be 4-6 months under the most optimistic scenario.

  34. nk Says:

My best wishes for your father from me as well, Xrlq.

And thank you to Anwyn and Xrlq for the blog-hosting lesson. According to Dafydd ab Hugh it was a cut fiber-optic cable at Hosting Matters.

On the topic, I think dreadlocks look ridiculous. A burgundy or neon green Mohawk, on the other hand ….

  35. Anwyn Says:

Four to six months? Ouch. I hope it goes smoothly.

  36. Right Wing Nation Says:
