It’s the Stupid Economy
Conventional wisdom is that Democrats own the economy, so when the financial market tanked, the race belonged to Obama. This is not because Obama or any other Democrats have actually done anything useful or productive to, um, help the economy. No, they “own” it because they on that issue, they stand for “doing something,” and “doing something” is generally an easier sell than trying to convince the electorate that the best thing you can do is nothing. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find some way to sell the free market as a positive change voters can believe in, rather than as the mere absence of some dumbass Democrat (but I repeat myself) proposal they can and should vote against.

One, McCain never tried to convince voters that the best thing to do for the economy is ‘nothing’.
Second, doing nothing is not the right thing to advocate. Yes, doing nothing is better than doing the wrong thing but it’s not as good as doing the right thing. And here again, McCain, as well as far too many other Republicans, weren’t offering up anything positive (what exactly, if anything, did McCain do once the carnage started in September?)
thus, it is no surprise that for voters, the Democrats filled the the vacuum created by GOP silence?

The Democrats precipitated the crisis with Fannie-Mae and Freddie Mac goading them into insolvency, Schumer even started a run on a bank that lead to its collapse. Yeh they own it.
