AntiVir sez it’s the TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen trojan horse. Is it, or is AntiVir full of crap? And if the latter, is there some way to decrapify AntiVir and allow it to run?

Every Google hit I found with that trojan’s name seems to have AntiVir beside it. Maybe a virus definition problem? Is your software paid, installed from original CD, or downloaded from the original author/company’s site? Something you got a copy of a copy from a friend, or fell off a truck?
(Too many unanswered questions, sorry. No insinuation, but no assumption.)
Suggestion: Install free versions of AVG and Avast, or alternatively use TrendMicro’s online scanner. Or all of the above, recommended. :) If nothing else hits on it, then Antivir is probably the culprit.

It was installed from the original CD, then I logged on to their site to download the latest version, but got the same error both times. I noticed the same pattern when Googling myself; it seemed like if it’s a trojan, you must be using AntiVir. Meaning that either AntiVir is brilliantly catching something everyone else seems to miss, or not to brilliantly catching something they should miss.

Avira is complaining about the executable being compressed with a common packer (ab)used by trojans. I’d recommend running upx -d on it first, and then rescanning.
