A-Hole of the Day: Ed Whelan
Memo to jerk: When you out a pseudonymous blogger for no good reason, you are the one being irresponsible, not him.
UPDATE: Whelan apologizes.

I am philosophically opposed to anonymous/pseudonymous blogging; hence, outing a pseudonymous blogger is a public service.
If you fear having your name attached to your comments/rhetoric, perhaps you shouldn’t be making them.

With all due respect to philosophy, that has got to be the most retarded comment I’ve read in months. Some people are philosphically opposed to private property. Hence, anyone who steals yours is doing a public service? WTF kind of argument is that?
If you fear people who express their opinions without attaching their legal names to them, don’t read the opinions of people who don’t attach their legal names to them. Meanwhile, go back to writing rock songs for Styx. You’re way better at that than arguing politics.
Last and least, if you’re getting the brilliant idea of outing me, as other a-holes have done in the past, don’t bother.

What’s funny is that although the damage to publius is already done, it’s Whelan who comes out on the short end of this. This has garnered him a lot of attention from all corners of the blogosphere, virtually all of it bad. He served only to undermine what little credibility he may have had. It’s too bad he had to take someone down with him in the process of outing himself as a douchebag…

As an update, Whelan has offered up a full, public apology, and not one of those non-apology apologies we see all too often. Good on him for that, anyway, even if it’s far too late.

Outing someone making obnoxious and gratuitously insulting comments or holding forth as some kind of “expert” without the credentials to back it up is not a crime; stealing is. Thus, your analogy fails by hypothesis.
I’m also not particularly interested in outing you. But if you’re going to declare war on anyone who isn’t bothered by the practice and nevertheless occasionally reads and comments on your opinions, it is not I, sir, who is the (how did you put it?) “a-hole.”

And by the way, having read your little apologia on the subject, you apparently do not qualify for outing on the “making obnoxious and gratuitously insulting comments or holding forth as some kind of ‘expert’ without the credentials to back it up” standards. Which makes you among the exceptions, not the rule.
