Given that there are a limited number of donor livers, are you upset that this drunk didn’t get one?

  2. Xrlq Says:

I don’t know if they made the right decision in this case or not. I do think the fact that he was a drunk is complicated by the fact that he was a kid when most of the damage was done, and it sounds like he was never really given a chance to prove he could go straight. Mostly, my point was that “universal” health care, isn’t. And can’t be.

Yep, much better to ration the care based simply on whether or not the guy has money.

    It’s not ‘rationed’ it’s bought.

It would have happened in the US also. The standard is 6 months alcohol free before a patient is eligible to be listed.

    Uncle:

Same difference. In the end, who gets health care is a function of who can afford it, not of who needs it.

And ParatrooperJJ is correct; we have pretty strict compliance rules for transplant recipients here in the US.

And it’s not like livers grow on trees. If you give the liver to an alcoholic kid, you’re by necessity NOT giving one to someone else who very well may be more deserving.
