GRNC Gets Results – in Charlotte and Beyond?

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 9:28 pm

Looks like the long overdue “premature” boycott against corporate gun-grabbing Marriott has paid off in a matter of days. It’s not official yet, but this email from GRNC suggests that there is an excellent chance the gun-grabbing Marriott will soon be the formerly gun-grabbing Marriott, not just in Charlotte but worldwide:

GRNC Alert 05-24-10:

GRNC campaign leads Marriott to say signs will be removed

Grass Roots North Carolina began a “Don’t Buy” campaign against Marriott International after its Charlotte hotel took money from and then made inadvertent criminals of hundreds of gun owners by posting “no firearms” signs *during* the weekend of the NRA convention and GRNC’s “Gala for Gun Rights.” Marriott confessed to a prohibition on firearms in all of its properties, many of which were posted.

After GRNC began the effort and Gun Rights Examiners Paul Valone, Dave Workman and David Codrea and others ran it, the boycott immediately “went viral,” appearing on forums across the country and generating untold numbers of contacts to Marriott – many of which were from Marriott’s “Rewards” members who supported the boycott. On Sunday, the Marriott boycott made nationally-syndicated radio on Tom Gresham’s “Gun Talk.”

Today, upper level Marriott executive Keith Thomas told GRNC board member Bill Krupicka that signs from the Charlotte property had already been removed, and that signs across the country will be removed promptly.

Please bear in mind that this victory is conditional: Marriott has not yet confirmed its policy, and a public apology to the gun owners staying in and traversing the Marriott across the weekend of the NRA convention has not yet been issued. Accordingly, please do not relax pressure against Marriott International yet. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Looks good for now, but keep the calls coming. As Yogi usedta say, it ain’t over till it’s over.

The issue is that I don’t think it was ever Marriott’s corporate policy to ban guns. The issue here, I believe, is with the local Marriott in Charlotte, who, at worst, poorly understood North Carolina law and did not appreciate the implications or finer points of the signage.

The email they sent says it was their corporate policy, not just in Charlotte but everywhere. If they actually thought NC law required that idiotic policy, they would have posted their signs in every hotel in NC that has a bar. Why isn’t there one in downtown Winston-Salem? For that matter, why isn’t there one in the Marriott Residency Inn I stayed in that wasn’t in downtown Charlotte, but was within its city limits?

Believe me, these guys knew exactly what they were doing. All they didn’t know was what the repercussions would be – or perhaps that there would be any.

I have stayed at Mariotts and most are gun friendly, some were corporate, others were franchise locations, some were posted no firearms.

If Marriott can enforce a rule on all their locations in the United State, corporate or franchise, that the entire property is non smoking. Then is should be very easy to tell each and every hotel, corporate or franchise, that you need to allow the lawful carry of firearms byy guests, open or concealed based on the local laws.

I thought their corporate policy was to follow state law?
    .-= Sebastian´s last blog ..Travesty =-.

  5. Xrlq Says:

No, that’s just corporate spin, right up there with us all being their “valued” customers and their guests’ safety supposedly being a high priority. The reality is that their policy, as articulated in their own mass email response, has been to be the biggest dicks toward gun owners that state law would allow – a policy which, I admit, technically does “follow” state law in the sense of not violating it.

But no matter – it now looks like GRNC has convinced them to abandon their horrible policy. Good for them.

  6. Mikee Says:

Were the photocopied prohibition signs of legal dimensions and lettering and wording, and were they posted in legally required locations?

When were the signs posted, before or during the gun carriers’ attendance at the event?

Who exactly posted the signs, and under what authority? Was it the hotel manager who ordered the posting, or an underling?

What is the legal effect of entering a non-posted building carrying legally, if that building is posted while one is inside it?
