Accepted Wisdom on Saddam and Terrorism
Much to the chagrin of conservatives, it’s long been Accepted Wisdom™ (i.e., an article of faith) among anti-war activists that the war in Iraq had nothing to do with the war on terrorism. Given the long history of involvement between Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime and international terror, that position may be difficult for non-moonbats to understand. Allow me to explain. Basically, the reasoning goes like this:
- So far, information suggesting that Saddam Hussein’s government may have been involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks remains inconclusive.
- Therefore, Saddam Hussein was not involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
That part was bad enough. From there, it only gets worse.
- Saddam Hussein was not involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
- Al-Qaeda was involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
- Therefore, Saddam Hussein had no connection to al-Qaeda.
Which, of course, is untrue, as is becoming increasingly clear (hat tip: Daily Pundit) as more and more documents from the Ba’athist regime are reviewed. Even if we were to ignore the mounting evidence, however, and pretend Saddam’s secular terror and Osama’s holy terror were like oil and water, we’d still need to leap off the deep end one more time. Here’s the clincher:
- Saddam Hussein had no connection to al-Qaeda.
- Al-Qaeda is involved in international terrorism.
- Therefore, Saddam Hussein was not involved in international terrorism.
Got it? If the logic seems too hard to grasp, no problem. Just repeat after me: “Bush lied, people died!” That’s all you need to know.
