Good News for Scott Peterson
Below is a transcript that was just leaked from the courthouse in Redwood City:
Mark Geragos: Scott! Relax! I’ve got some great news for you.
Scott Peterson: Did the bailiff just tip you off that they’re gonna let me go?
Geragos: No, silly. It’s too late for that. But trust me, the news is good.
Peterson: They’re going to recommend 20 to life?
Geragos: Nope, can’t do that, either. But c’mon, let’s celebrate!
Peterson: Life without parole? OK, I can deal with that.
Geragos: No, it’s [inaudible]
Judge, in background: Have you reached a uninimous verdict?
Peterson: What was that?
Foreman, in background: Yes, we have, Your Honor…
Peterson: So what is it?
Geragos: I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

The Jury Spoke…
…and death was its recommendation.
Not that he won’t be around for another zillion years appealing everything under the sun.
Update: Xrlq had the insider’s view of the riveting moments before the verdict was read. Surf over and read Mark Ger…

Peterson Transcript
While Xrlq takes an insurance angle, I figured the good news would be more in line with Peterson being able to choose the manner of his own death perhaps like Arthur Jarrett of Meaning of Life fame.

Actually, given California’s reluctance to actually execute anyone, coupled with its mandatory appeals process for “condemned” prisoners, one is more likely to get one’s trial overturned with a death sentence than with life-without-parole.
Certainly if one was incorrectly or unjustly convicted one would prefer the death sentence as the odds of reversal are (far?) higher than those of execution, while with “life” it’s a struggle to get an appeal heard.

I thought the god news was that he got the death penalty…which in California means he’ll never get killed for, like, 600 years.

If Geragos’ claim that he didn’t prepare for the penalty phase is accurate, he should be disbarred. If he did prepare and is lying to set up an appeal, he should also be disbarred.

Good News for Scott Peterson
KFI has been at the forefront in covering the Scott Peterson trial. Many at the station got quite a chuckle from XLRQ’s “report” regarding the Peterson verdict which also proves that a regular radio advertiser is apparently getting their message…

I love the Geico commercial that has a Japanese film spoof.
Announcer: The Chicago Underground calls it “spellbinding”!
Father: My daughter, I’m not sure I can make it.
Daughter: Father, you must be strong, for I bring… GOOD NEWS?
Father: Aaah, you bring good news?
Daughter: Yes! I just save a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to Geico.
Now THAT is high comedy.

Joel: No one is going to be disbarred. I have no doubt intellectually Geragos knew he was going to lose. However, psychologically he was not prepared for it. In my opinion, that is what he meant. Years ago a supervisor of mine moved for a continuance explaining he had completed several back to back trials and was unprepared for the case now before the court. The court denied his motion. The court of appeal found that he was not ineffective and even praised him. Appellate courts look to see whether performance fell below the prevailing standards, not at comments made it court as proof of ineffective assistance of counsel.
